    • The present tubular containers, for example for foodstuffs, toothpaste, or the like, have a top cap secured to an initially open ended tubular body by means of a heat bond such as soldering where metal containers are involved or welding or fusing where plastics materials are involved. The heat for making the bond is generated by friction resulting from relative rotation between the cap and the tubular body. For this purpose, a tool is provided with a rotatably supported counter presser forming an inner holding member and with a rotating presser tool forming an outer holding member which holding members hold the cap therebetween so that its outer rim contacts the edge of the tubular body to produce frictional heat when the cap and tubular body are rotated relative to each other, said frictional heat being sufficient to cause said bond.

    • A method of, and apparatus for, friction welding two components such as universal joint members to the ends of a shaft, wherein the shaft is held stationary while the components are rotated against its ends to produce welding conditions, and then released as welding pressure is applied while the components are braked. Allowing the shaft to rotate with the end component during formation of the welds avoids weld quality problems occurring due to the formation and tearing apart of a succession of welds during the time which would be taken for the end components to come to rest if the shaft were held stationary.

    • A method and apparatus for maintaining quality control in a friction welding operation where two workpieces are relatively rotated while being constantly pressed into engagement at a common interface. One or more operating conditions, including axial upset at the common interface, are monitored and a signal is substantially instantaneously produced to indicate correlation between the monitored operating conditions and respective ranges for those conditions which are predetermined as being representative of an effective bond between the workpieces. In a first embodiment, operating conditions of axial upset, pressure of engagement between the workpieces and relative rotating speed are simultaneously monitored. In a second embodiment, axial upset is monitored in selectively delayed relation to commencement of the weld in order to provide improved quality control over inertia welding.
