    • A production casting line includes a foam pattern former producing destructible foam patterns for the forming of cast parts. A pattern clusters inventory station is provided immediately adjacent to the process line having a plurality of different preformed foam pattern clusters which are immediately available for introduction and insertion into the production line by interposing of the same into the process line. A substantial number of different patterns are stored. The foam patterns are stable, can be inventoried for long periods and are relatively inexpensive. The versatility with the inventoried patterns increases the operating efficiency and reduce the overall cost of the manufacturing operation. The cast line includes flasks within the pattern clusters and are mounted at a receiving station. Sand is compacted about the foam pattern. Molten metal is introduced at a power station resulting in vaporization and destruction of the plastic pattern and filling of the cavity to duplicate the pattern in the metal. If a demand exists for an alternate inventoried part during a run of a part, the inventoried patterns are moved directly from inventory into the line without shut down. When the special run is completed, the system reverts to the scheduled run of a previous part.

    • A register system is provided for making molds for metal casting which reduces flaws attributable to parting line shift. This is accomplished by urging the cope mold flask (11) against two fixed stops (50, 52) on the long axis, and one fixed stop (54) on the short axis of the flask. This same register principle is applied in the drag mold making station 18, where the drag flask (15) is urged against two fixed stops (100, 102) on the long axis, and one fixed stop (90) on the short axis of the flask. At the closer station (24), where the mold halves are assembled, they are again urged against two fixed stops (134, 136) on the long axis, and one fixed stop (142) on the short axis of the flasks. Thus the flasks are properly aligned to the patterns at the mold making stations, and again properly aligned to each other at the closer station, so as to eliminate parting line shift problems of the mold halves.

    • A system for producing foundry molds providing a device for filling empty mold boxes with mold forming material at a filling station includes a first rotary shifting device and a second rotary shifting device located on opposite sides of the filling station. The first shifting device operates to shift pattern devices from the filling station to a first shifting station while simultaneously moving another pattern device from the first shifting station into position at the filling station. Likewise, the second shifting device moves mold halves from the filling station to a second shifting station while simultaneously moving an empty mold box from the second shifting station to the filling station. The pattern devices are moved to and from the first shifting station by a first conveyor device and the empty mold boxes and the mold halves are moved to and from the second shifting station by a second conveyor device which extends generally parallel to the first conveyor device. A third parallel conveyor device transports assembled filled mold boxes and pattern devices from the filling station to a single-station mold forming unit.

    • A cooling conveyor control system which selectively controls a mold cooling conveyor assembly adapted to receive poured molds from the pouring rails of an automatic molding machine and transport them to a collecting conveyor or shakeout mechanism in a continuous or selectively spaced apart mold string. A cooling conveyor control system is provided whereby the cooling conveyor is indexed to move synchronously in response to corresponding operation of the molding machine. The control system includes an electronic controller which processes information received from the control system of the molding machine with feedback information from the hydrostatic drive of the cooling conveyor so as to produce a signal which operates a servo valve to correspondingly control the drive system of the cooling conveyor assembly. The electronic controller acts in response to signals from the control system of the molding machine so as to index the cooling conveyor forward at the precise acceleration, deceleration, and pitch required to maintain a continuous mold string from the molding machine to the collecting conveyor or shakeout.

    • A system for making sand molds each having associated therewith a core member composed of a core element or a network of core elements is disclosed. The system includes a machine for making and depositing onto a conveyor, mold sections having joint faces in engagement to form a string of closed-up mold sections. Each mold section has a mold cavity defined in its joint face. A core making machine is positioned adjacent the string of closed-up mold sections and include at least two core box sections, each having a joint face and being arranged for mating of their joint faces for molding a core member therebetween. One of the core box sections retains the mold core member when the faces of the core box sections are parted. The core box section is placed into an orientation such that its joint face is parallel with the exposed face of the last mold section. A core mask is provided for fetching the core member from the core box section and transferring the core member to the last mold section. Translatory means are provided for moving the core mask between a core picking up position where it engages with the core box section while its joint face is parallel with the exposed joint face of the last mold section, and a core delivery position where it engages the exposed joint face of the last mold.
