    • An apparatus for sorting round bearings which include a pair of elongated cylinders that are rotatably supported so that the longitudinal axes thereof diverge, defining a sorting gap between the surface of the cylinders. The cylinders are supported on an inclined plane and are connected to a drive means by means of a flexible driving member for rotating the cylinders in opposite directions. The bearings which are to be sorted are fed onto the cylinders and moved down the inclined plane, down the sorting gap until the width of the sorting gap is sufficient to permit the bearings to drop through the gap into preselected receptacles.

    • A guide member is provided along the length of and between the two rollers of a classifying machine. The guide member is positioned in proximity to one of the rollers and the height of the guide member is fixed according to the shape and size of a workpiece so that the guide member supports one end of the workpiece when that end of the workpiece is in contact with the surface of the roller adjacent the guide member. When a workpiece is fed onto the rollers, one end of it is guided onto the guide member and buttressed against the surface of the adjacent roller. The other end of the workpiece is guided onto the surface of the other roller so that the workpiece is supported by the two rollers and the guide member in a stable configuration.

    • A machine for effecting an orientation of carrots or other elongate, tapered vegetables placed thereon, comprising a vibratory table of elongate configuration whose upper surface is principally constituted by a plurality of generally parallel members. These members are spaced along the longitudinal centerline of the table, with the spacing between members increasing incrementally such that the minimum spacing between members exists at one end of the table, and the maximum spacing exists at the other end. Alignment means are utilized such that elongate vegetables cuased to be individually aligned with the longitudinal axis of the table can travel for a substantial portion of the length of the table, bridging at least some of the spaces between members. Vibration producing means are connected to the vibratory table for inducing sufficient vibration into the spaced members as to cause the elongate vegetables to travel toward the other end of the table until such time as each vegetable has reached a space between two members that it is unable to bridge, at which time it falls crown end first between such pair of members. My machine may be effectively utilized in connection with the sorting of vegetables to length, but it is more typically utilized with a topping device for effectively removing the crown end from each of the elongate vegetables.

    • A whole fruit size grader comprising a horizontally oscillating table having a generally horizontal flat area on which fruit to be sized is loaded and a sorting area which slopes therefrom downwardly to a prime size fruit collecting area or station. Said sloped sorting area embodies closely spaced side-by-side troughs extending in the direction of the table oscillation. These troughs communicate at their upper ends with the loading area to receive the fruit in response to table oscillation, have oppositely sloped side walls for guiding the fruit to the lower discharge end thereof, and have tapered discharge openings upstream of their lower discharge ends for separating the undersize fruit from the prime size fruit and have associate means in the form of horizontal fins over said discharge openings which retard the fruit as it moves over said discharge openings to influence the separate collection of the undersize fruit.

    • A substrate grader accepts or rejects a substrate depending upon the degree of warp and then sorts the accepted substrates according to a dimension thereof. The grader comprises a first plate which is U-shaped and inclined at an acute angle with respect to the horizontal, the two arms of the first plate extending above the base thereof. A first elongated member (or lower guide) that is attached to the front of the base has a straight side which is adjacent to and spaced a short distance away from the opening in the first plate. A second elongated member, that is attached to the back of the free ends of the arms, supports a second plate (or upper guide) thereon which extends between the arms, which has a top surface in a plane containing the top surfaces of the arms and base, and which has a stepped edge in the opening. Successive stepped surfaces of this edge are parallel to and spaced progressively farther from the straight surface of the first member such that rectangular substrates contacting these spaced apart surfaces may fall through an opening therebetween to be sorted according to ranges of the length thereof. A pair of flat plates that are supported a prescribed distance above one arm receive substrates therebetween for measuring warp in the substrates. The first plate is mounted on a vibrator which causes substrates to move across this plate.
