    • A wax coating device for a wet type electrophotographic color printer is capable of preventing the coating operation when printed matter is not supposed to be wax-coated. The wax coating device includes: a coating roller rotatably disposed so as to be partially immersed in the wax of a wax tank; a pressing roller disposed so as to be in tight contact with the coating roller for pressing the printed matter passing between the pressing and coating rollers against the coating roller; a pressing roller spacer for permitting the printed matter to pass between the pressing and coating rollers by spacing the pressing roller apart from the coating roller; and a coating prevention section for preventing contact of printed matter with the coating roller when the printed matter passes between the spaced pressing and coating rollers by being selectively advanced between and withdrawn from the pressing and coating rollers in accordance with the operation of the pressing roller spacer. The pressing roller spacer includes a pressing roller bracket and a cam gear for alternately rotating the coating prevention section. The coating prevention section includes a cover which is advanced between and withdrawn from the pressing and coating rollers in accordance with the rotational movement of the cam gear. The cover is advanced above the coating roller by the movement of the pressing roller which is spaced from the coating roller. Accordingly, the printed matter which is not supposed to be wax-coated is prevented from making contact with the coating roller.

    • A system for controlling deflection of a dynamic surface includes at least one sensor in communication with the dynamic surface for detecting the presence of a deflecting force on the dynamic surface and generating a feedback signal proportional to the deflecting force. The system includes a controller in communication with the at least one sensor for receiving the feedback signal and generating an output signal in response to the feedback signal. At least one piezoelectric actuator is in communication with the dynamic surface and in communication with the controller for receiving the output signal and applying a counter deflecting force on the dynamic surface for removing the deflection from the dynamic surface. In other preferred embodiments, the piezoelectric actuators maintain the dynamic surface in a preferred shape, such as a curved surface.

    • A paster for the application of a film of water-containing adhesive to a running substrate of cigarette paper or the like automatically replaces the evaporated percentage of water when the substrate-processing machine is idle but the paster continues to circulate adhesive in order to prevent a rise in the viscosity of the then circulating and water releasing adhesive. The quantity of water in the circulating adhesive and other parameters (such as the temperature) of the adhesive are monitored by several sensors, and signals which are transmitted by such sensors are processed to regulate the admission of water in order to maintain the percentage of water, and hence the consistency, of the circulating adhesive within a range not appreciably departing from that when the paster is in actual use to apply one or more films of adhesive to the running substrate.

    • The invention relates to a device for applying a coating substance to a continuous paper web in a process for producing abrasion-resistant laminates for manufacturing decorative paper. The coating substance consists of a viscous mixture of melamine resin and alphacellulose to which particles of corundum are added, and is applied to the visible surface of the paper. The inventive device includes a deflector roll (2) on which the paper web (1) lies in an area in which it loops around; a metering roll (6) which is arranged parallel to the deflector roll (2) and forms the boundary of a gap with the same, and which is driven synchronously or almost synchronously with the deflector roll; a slit nozzle (7) for applying the coating substance either directly to the paper web (1) on the deflector roll (2) or to the metering roll (6); and a doctor blade of a rectangular piece (9) of flexible rubber type material. This material is fixed on one side by its back edge, parallel to the axes of the two rolls (2,6) and lies loosely on the upper end of the paper web (1) running off of the deflector roll (2).
