    • The invention relates to a device (10) for mechanically comminuting material conglomerates composed of materials having different density and/or consistency, comprising a comminuting chamber (14) having a feed side and an outlet side, which comminuting chamber is surrounded by an in particular circular cylindrical and/or conical comminuting chamber wall (42) expanded in a downward direction and has at least two segments which are consecutive in an axial direction, in each of which at least one rotor (26, 28, 30) is arranged coaxially to the comminuting chamber, wherein each rotor has a rotor shaft and has striking tools (38) extending at least largely radially into the comminuting chamber at least during operation, a feeding cone (12), which covers the rotor shaft(s), is arranged above the comminuting chamber (14) on the feed side, and an inflow funnel (11) is arranged above the feeding cone (12), wherein an inflow region is formed between the inflow funnel and the feeding cone, the size (d) of which inflow region can be adjusted, the directions of rotation of the rotors (26, 28, 30) are opposite in at least two consecutive segments, discharge ribs (48) are arranged annularly on the inside of the comminuting chamber wall at axial distances and/or the radius of the comminuting chamber wall (42) increases from top to bottom, and an air flow apparatus (17, 72) for leading a particle/air mixture out of the comminuting chamber (14) is arranged in connection with the comminuting chamber, which air flow apparatus has at least one fan rotor (31) arranged coaxially to the rotor axis, the at least one fan rotor having a dedicated shaft (33), which is driven by means of a dedicated fan drive (25) in order to rotate the fan rotor independently of the rotors. Very high impact energies of material conglomerates to be separated against the striking tools are achieved by means of such a device, wherein the smashed particles can be effectively transferred into a further processing stage. In addition, the material separation can be controlled by means of the effective control of the material flow, in particular the flow of very fine particles.

    • A compact medical waste disposal device, operable without water or other processing, disposal or disinfecting fluid or solution, for pulverizing Sharps into medically acceptably safe small particles, and directing the particles into a disposable container. The disposal device comprises a waste receiving and pulverizing chamber containing a pulverizing disc blade, with the disc blade being operable only when the pulverizing chamber is sealed. The pulverizing disc grinds the medical waste against the inner surface of a closely adjacent liner of the pulverizing chamber. Relatively heavy elements, rotatably swing on the upper surface of the pulverizing disc to direct medical waste materials and fragments, towards the pulverizing interface between disc and liner. Comminuted medical waste, falls beneath the blade into a disposal chamber, where a sweeper element, integral with the underside of the disc blade and rotatable therewith, continuously completely clears pulverized material, without fluid disposal carriers, into an outlet attached to a disposable container. The disc blade embodies at least one short recessed portion of the circumference thereof, preferably in the form of a flat, offset from the liner by up to 1/8", to permit resilient medical waste (rubber, plastic and similar materials) to pass therethrough without blade jamming.

    • In a hammermill or the like and employing hammerheads with sockets which receive the rotor hammer arms, slots are provided in the hammer arms to receive cross pins which extend through apertures in the hammerheads and the slots to hold the hammerheads to the arms. Spacers having a convex outer surface which is complementary to the curved slot ends and a concave inner surface complementary to the curvature of the pins are employed to positively position the pins in the desired position in the slots and thus, by use of different size spacers, enable adjustment of the radial extension of the hammerheads with respect to the arms to compensate for wear and maintain a desired clearance with the working chamber wall and thus maintain a desired particle size.

    • In an apparatus for reducing automobile bodies to scrap suitable for use in metallurgical furnaces, automobile bodies, front end forward are placed on an inclined chute, one behind another, the chute accommodating two bodies in tandem. Power-driven feed rolls, the upper one of which is vertically movable, control the rate of feed of the lead body into a reducing mill having an upright rotor with a shell of downwardly decreasing diameter having a replaceable lining therein. Spaced knocker arms with cutters at the free ends, forming the top of the rotor, progressively shear and rend the lead ends of the car body as it projects into the mill and the pieces are further broken up and rolled into balls and otherwise irregularly shredded and compacted as they then move down between the rotor and the shell lining, the rotor having ring hammers at intervals around its periphery from a level just below said arms to its bottom. The end product drops into an annular trough from which it is expelled by vanes at the bottom of the rotor. Four motors with drive pinions arranged around a central gear wheel on an extension drive shaft at the bottom of the rotor drive the rotor at high speed.
