    • In an apparatus for reducing automobile bodies to scrap suitable for use in metallurgical furnaces, automobile bodies, front end forward are placed on an inclined chute, one behind another, the chute accommodating two bodies in tandem. Power-driven feed rolls, the upper one of which is vertically movable, control the rate of feed of the lead body into a reducing mill having an upright rotor with a shell of downwardly decreasing diameter having a replaceable lining therein. Spaced knocker arms with cutters at the free ends, forming the top of the rotor, progressively shear and rend the lead ends of the car body as it projects into the mill and the pieces are further broken up and rolled into balls and otherwise irregularly shredded and compacted as they then move down between the rotor and the shell lining, the rotor having ring hammers at intervals around its periphery from a level just below said arms to its bottom. The end product drops into an annular trough from which it is expelled by vanes at the bottom of the rotor. Four motors with drive pinions arranged around a central gear wheel on an extension drive shaft at the bottom of the rotor drive the rotor at high speed.

    • A support assembly for a tiltable hot metal processing vessel, including a trunnion ring encircling the vessel, and upper and lower support brackets fixed to the vessel. The upper support brackets are arranged to engage bearing surfaces on the upper portion of the trunnion ring. The lower brackets are provided with inclined bearing surfaces sloped downwardly and outwardly from the upright vessel. The lower surface of the trunnion ring is provided with inclined support surfaces which confront the bearing surfaces of the lower brackets, and which slope downwardly and outwardly but diverge outwardly with respect to the bearing surfaces of the lower brackets. Wedge pieces are disposed between and engage the lower support surfaces of the trunnion ring and the bearing surfaces of the lower brackets.

    • A ring structure for cooling the nose or mouth portion of a metallurgical processing vessel, such as a basic oxygen furnace. The ring is formed of radially outwardly extending upper and lower plate members secured to the shell of the vessel at the mouth or nose portion thereof. An outer face plate is fixed at its axial ends to the upper and lower plates and is spaced from the vessel whereby a continuous coolant receiving cavity is defined. Coolant inlet and outlet openings communicating with the cavity are provided. Baffle plates are disposed throughout the coolant cavity for assuring turbulent flow of coolant through the ring to thereby improve heat transfer between the shell and the coolant. An outlet chamber is arranged in communication with the coolant outlet with a portion of the chamber being above the plane of the cavity for assuring complete filling of the cavity with coolant and thereby eliminating the possibility of formation of gas pockets in the ring.

    • A support assembly for use with a hot metal processing vessel, including a plurality of upper primary brackets fixed to the vessel at spaced intervals thereabout, each of the brackets having laterally extending trunnion-ring engaging bottom portions. A trunnion ring is provided in spaced relationship to an intermediate section of the vessel, and is arranged to have sliding contact with the ring-engaging portions of the primary brackets. The primary brackets have T-shaped pockets at the lower ends thereof, which pockets are sized to receive similarly shaped lugs fixed to the upper surface of the trunnion ring. Wear strips are detachably fixed to the lugs and disposed between the sides of the lugs and the confronting surfaces of the pockets of the brackets.
