    • Improved devices for filtration of fluid suspensions that form flow resistant filter cakes, e.g., waste-water treatment sludges, have a cylindrical filter unit mounted for rotation about an approximately horizontal axis. Influent is charged in one end, filter cake forms on an inner rigid filter media surface and discharges at the other end. Pressurized air is applied along a top, longitudinal area and vacuum assist is applied along a bottom longitudinal area of the rotating filter unit. In preferred embodiments, the cylindrical unit is formed of wire spirally wound into a cylinder with spaces therebetween, there are a plurality of spaced apart bars fixed normal to the helical wire on the inner surface and rigid filter media formed of particulate material bonded in a resin matrix fills the cavities between the bars and covers the wire spirals.

    • Centrifugal separator drum (FIG. 1) for the clarification and separation of liquids, having one or more paring systems 12, 13 for the removal of the clarified or separated liquids, a stationary inlet tube 11 which communicates with a smooth, cylindrical inlet chamber 18, which rotates with the drum and is affixed to the latter, via an opening that is slightly larger than the inlet tube. Outlets ports 20 lead out of the inlet chamber into a forechamber 21 which communicates on the one hand with an annular chamber 24 situated ahead of the inlet chamber and on the other hand with the riser passages 23 of the plate insert 4. According to the invention, the inlet chamber 18 is sealed off from the external atmosphere; the distance from the outlet of the inlet tube 11 to the entry of the outlet ports 20 amounts to at least thrice the inside diameter of the inlet chamber, and the total cross section of the outlet ports is smaller than the cross section of the inlet chamber and larger than the cross section of the inlet tube. The outlet ports have one or more chokes. Thereby, during operation, an increased liquid pressure develops in the lower part of the inlet chamber ahead of the outlet ports and the inlet chamber can be kept largely filled with liquid.

    • A pocket centrifuge has a plurality of sieve pockets having sieve surfaces and orbitable about an axis with the sieve surfaces forming sieve angles with perpendiculars to planes including this axis. A filtrant is fed radially to these pockets so that solids collect on the surfaces thereof and a filtrate passes through the surfaces. These solids have a friction angle measured to a perpendicular to the centrifugal force acting on them which is dependent on the magnitude of this force and their coefficient of friction. The angular orbiting speed of the pocket is periodically varied between one speed at which the respective friction angle of the solids is smaller than the sieve angle and the solids slide on the sieve surface and another angle at which the respective friction angle of the solids is greater than the sieve angle and the solids sit on the sieve surface. This variation in angular orbiting speed can be obtained by periodically braking or accelerating the rotor carrying the pocket, or by mounting this rotor for rotation about two axes for continuous acceleration and deceleration of the pockets. Alternately the sieve angles can be changed by pivoting the pockets on the rotor to achieve the same effect.

    • A centrifugal filter has a centrifuge drum rotatable about an axis and provided with a plurality of sieve support plates lining the drum. Each of the plates is generally flat and rectangular and has a radially inwardly directed inner face. They are each formed with an array of flow grooves extending on and opening radially inwardly at the inner face and each having an outer end and an inner end spaced along the plate therefrom. The flow grooves are of increasing flow cross section from their outer ends to their inner ends. An outlet serves for draining liquid from the inner ends. A filter medium overlies the inner face over the flow grooves. Thus flow is maintained substantially uniform even at the outer groove ends, where relatively little filtrate moves. As a result clogging of these flow grooves is impossible; they will stay clear along their entire lengths.

    • Improved hydrocyclone separators are adapted for connection to an improved header having concentrically arranged feed and accept nipples. The hydrocyclone includes feeding means including unique guide vane means for swinging the feed suspension from a generally longitudinal direction to a generally spiral direction and accelerating same prior to feeding the suspension into the separation chamber. The accept outlet includes an elongated tubular member with the guide vanes being located in the annular region defined between the tubular member and the wall of the chamber. The wall of the separator chamber terminates at the large end thereof at an annular rim the latter being connected to the feed nipple. The elongated tubular accept outlet has an end portion concentrically arranged relative to the annular rim of the separator chamber for connection to the accept nipple which is concentrically arranged relative to and within the feed nipple. The system operates efficiently at relatively low feed pressures, is simple in construction, easy to service and operate and can be arranged to occupy minimal floor space.

    • Apparatus for protecting aquatic life carried by water passing through a vertical traveling band screen unit having inwardly opening screening baskets. Each basket carries a longitudinally extending, inwardly projecting baffle adjacent its trailing side with the portion thereof adjacent the basket being imperforate. The area along the length of each basket at the inner side of the baffle is imperforate and defines with the baffle a pocket for receiving water and aquatic life carried thereby upon upward movement through the water and is adapted to discharge the water and aquatic life carried thereby upon movement of the pocket to a predetermined elevation. A low pressure stream of water transfers the aquatic life from the pocket to a discharge trough located inwardly of the screening unit.
