    • The present invention is a hand-held stripping tool. The tool is adapted for cutting an outer sheath of a first electrical cable. Inside the sheath is parallel spaced apart insulation covered wires and a core member containing an uncovered ground wire between the insulation covered wires. The sheath has spaced apart curved sides conforming to the covered wires. The tool has spaced apart first and second jaw members adapted to be pressed together. The jaw members have cutting edges that receive a portion of the first cable along its length. The cutting edges define an opening configured to cut the sheath and the core without significantly cutting the insulation on the wires or the unsheathed ground wire when the jaw members are pressed together to form the opening. The portion of the sheath is then removed in one continuous process.

    • A method of manufacturing elements for an optical cable, such elements including a tube of an elastic material, e.g. a synthetic resin or an elastomer, which loosely encloses one or more optical fibers. Preferably, the fiber or fibers are longer than the enclosing tube and the tube is filled with a material which prevents the migration of water, etc. The tube in mechanically stabilized form and the optical fiber or fibers are advanced toward a traction zone where the tube is pulled. Prior to the traction zone, the tube is slit or cut longitudinally through one thickness of the wall, the cut edges are spread apart and the optical fiber or fibers are inserted into the tube through the gap between the cut edges. Optionally, filling material is also inserted into the tube through such gap or a downstream gap subsequently formed. The tube-optical fiber assembly follows a straight line downstream of traction zone to a collecting point. The tube may be tensioned downstream of the traction zone either by a pulling wheel or the collecting means. Also, apparatus for performing the method including slitting or cutting means, rectilineal traction means, collecting means and optionally, separate pulling means following the traction means.

    • An apparatus for the facile installation of non-cylindrical marker sleeves on wire-like members such as electrical wiring or cable. The apparatus is particularly directed to the handling of non-cylindrical marker sleeves which are tightly and slidably arranged on fingers of a carrier belt. A stripper mechanism employing a series of split tines is slidably positioned on a base capable of fixedly holding the carrier belt and fingers. The split tines are directed along either side of each finger to engage a first end of each non-cylindrical sleeve and to force the sleeve from its supporting finger. A die is fixed to the base to receive the sleeves as they are stripped from the carrier fingers. The die includes a plurality of formed channels which receive the non-cylindrical sleeves and force them into a substantially cylindrical configuration as they are stripped into respective channels. If the stripper mechanism does not force the sleeves entirely off the carrier fingers, a knife may be passed between the ends of the fingers and the die to sever the unstripped portions of the sleeves. The die holds the stripped portions of the sleeves in place and in a substantially cylindrical configuration in order that wire-like members may be passed through the sleeves unresisted. The wire-like member and sleeve assemblies may then be lifted from the channels and the sleeve easily positioned where desired. Subsequent portions of the severed sleeves or a new set of sleeves may then be stripped into the again vacant die.
