    • The invention concerns a clamping element of a coupling device for releasably but axially and rotationally fixing tool components for dry machining (MMS technology) and for wet machining. The element provides a friction-type connection between the components to be coupled. A cooling tube is arranged at the center of the coupling device. The spindle is provided with an elongated hole run through which cooling tube passes. A variable contour between the base body and the clamping segment enables an increase in distribution of forces for the support of the clamping segments. The novel geometry of the clamping segments results in novel contours in the base body with smoother transitions, hence a better force distribution, thereby reducing material breakage and a more reliable and robust clamping. By virtue of their novel geometry, the clamping segments have an increased surface enabling larger clamping screws to be used.

    • A radial mandrel is provided having a plurality of alternating and interfitting large and small segments mounted on a pair of cones, which cones are movable axially toward and away from one another to in turn move the segments radially inwardly and outwardly between a contracted and expanded position. The radial mandrel includes an improved mechanism for axially moving the cones comprising a quill adapter and scroll sleeve adapted for use with a drive shaft of standard configuration. The scroll sleeve is formed with spiral grooves which engage the cones and are operable to move the cones axially toward and away from one another as the scroll sleeve is rotated.

    • A tool for preparing tube ends for welding comprising a rotary tool head connected to the drive shaft of an air motor driven angle drive unit, said tool head having a plurality of radially extending arms provided with inclined cutting edges operative, upon rotation of the tool head and axial advance thereof with respect to the tube, to chamfer or bevel the end of the tube for welding, said tool head further being provided with guide means for rotation of the tool head about the tube axis. One form of tool herein is further characterized in that the cutter carrying arms are radially adjustable for chamfering different sizes of tubes. Another form of tool herein is further characterized in that at least one of the cutters is indexable to a position wherein the cutting edge thereof is perpendicular to the axis of the tube to dress the end surface of the tube. Yet another form of the tool herein is further characterized in that the tool head guide means is firmly secured within the tube end and provides a guide bore along which the tool head is accurately guided for chamfering the ends of hard-to-cut tubes as of stainless steel or the like.
