    • A power supply apparatus for a line connection type fuel cell system includes a power converter system (PCS) control power supply which generates PCS control power from line power, a balance of plant (BOP) power supply which generates BOP power from line power, a regulator which generates PCS control power from the BOP power, a first switching unit switched by a control signal, which directs the line power to one of the PCS control power supply and the BOP power supply, a second switching unit switched by a control signal, which selects an output of one of the PCS control power supply and the regulator to provide PCS control power, and a controller which controls switching of the first and second switching units in response to a starting command.

    • An electric motor (5) and an accessory circuit (7, 8) are connected in parallel to an output terminal (1A) of a fuel cell power plant (2). A secondary battery (3) is connected to the output terminal (1A) through a DC/DC converter (6) which controls an output voltage in both directions. The accessories (7, 8) are directly driven by the output of the fuel cell power plant (2). A reduction in the output voltage of the fuel cell power plant (2) resulting from an increase in the load of the electric motor (5) is prevented by discharging power from the secondary battery (3) via the DC/DC converter (6). By directly supplying electric current output from the fuel cell plant to the accessory circuit (7, 8) without passing through the DC/DC converter (6), the power loss due to the DC/DC converter (6) is reduced.

    • Propulsion control system and method are provided for use in vehicles including a propulsion motor that is powered by a fuel cell. The fuel cell unit produces a compatible voltage for the propulsion motor, thereby removing the need for a dc/dc boost converter. A buck/boost converter and a standard 12 volt battery are used to start the fuel cell. An inverter receives dc electric voltage from the fuel cell and outputs ac electric voltage to the propulsion motor. A vehicle controller receives a voltage input from the fuel cell unit and outputs a current reference to a comparing device. The comparing device compares the current reference from the vehicle controller to an actual current of the fuel cell unit and then outputs a signal to a PI control which outputs a control signal to a fuel cell controller, whereby the power output of the fuel cell is controlled based on the actual current of the fuel cell.

    • A fuel cell power generating system comprising a central hydrogen-generating plant, a plurality of fuel cell power generating units installed respectively at the sites of power demand for on-site power generation, and piping comprising a main pipe connected to the hydrogen-generating plant, branch pipes connecting the fuel cell power generating units to the main pipe, and valves for regulating the pressure and flow rate of hydrogen gas according to the operating condition of the fuel cell power generating units. The fuel cell power generating units are operated according to power demand, and the surplus hydrogen gas is stored in the piping at an elevated pressure to supplement the capacity of the hydrogen-generating plant when the hydrogen gas demand of the fuel cell power generating units exceeds the capacity of the hydrogen-generating plant. The hydrogen-generating plant is able to operate continuously in the steady state for efficient hydrogen gas generation, while the operation of the fuel cell power generating units is controlled according to power demand.
