    • A Savonius vertical axis wind turbine rotor has at least three spokes, at least two vanes, and fasteners. Each spoke includes a hub with central opening and arcuate ribs integral with the hub and extending radially outwardly. Channels are defined in at least one surface of each rib. Vanes of sheet material generally conform to an inner or outer surface of the ribs and have openings aligned with the channels. First fasteners pass through the openings into the channels and cooperate with second fasteners provided within the channels. Each hub may define a clamp which cooperates with a shaft, the clamp including a radial slot in the hub communicating with the central opening and fastener receiving elements on opposite sides of the slot. The vanes may overlap the central opening so that there is spillover from one vane to the next when the rotor is rotated by the wind.

    • Disclosed are various embodiments of cross-wind turbines that are capable of providing high efficiencies over a wide range of wind velocities. An airfoil stator causes wind to accelerate along its surface and creates a low pressure area on the leading face of the rotor blade during the power stroke. A blocking stator blocks wind from impeding the movement of the rotor blades during the return cycle and directs wind onto the trailing face of the rotor blades during the power cycle. A large pressure differential is created between the leading face of the rotor blade and the trailing face of the rotor blade during the power cycle which creates a large amount of force that rotates the rotor blade about the central shaft. In some embodiments, gaps are provided between the inside edge of the rotor blade and a stationary shaft which vents wind collected by the rotor blade during certain portions of the rotation cycle. The vented wind increases the pressure on the trailing face of the rotor blades during the return cycle to further assist in the efficiency of this system.

A rotor lobe with additional reaction surfaces near the tip to increase the angle of rotation that produces power. A flow shielding and directing device that increases the efficiency of reaction surface rotors. Possibilities include replacement or augmentation of: existing electrical energy prime mover dynamos, air compressing, pumping, milling, and other power needs. The dynamo can be built using low-tech, low-cost materials and methods, and is inherently resistant to over speed and damage from periodically high velocity fluid flow.

    • The present invention relates to a combination of two vertical axis Savonius-type rotors (20,120) mounted on a support structure (210) and a deflector plate (200). The deflector plate serves an an augmentation apparatus which considerably increases the power output of both Savonius-type-rotors and also improves their self-starting ability and smoothness of operation. The support structure is mounted for rotation about a central vertical shaft (242) so that the rotor-deflector combination can be properly positioned. The invention also provides a partition plate (236) positioned between the rotors to give rigidity to the deflector plate.

    • A vertical axis wind turbine system includes a vertical shaft rotatably mounted about a vertical axis and an upper platen coupled to the vertical shaft. Vanes are coupled to the vertical shaft and extend downward from the upper platen. Each vane has a concave face and an opposing convex face. A lower platen is coupled to the vertical shaft and to each vane. The lower platen has an opening formed therein proximate to the concave face of each vane. A plenum is disposed below the vertical axis wind turbine and is rotatably mounted about the shaft for rotation about the vertical axis. The plenum includes a top portion disposed proximate to the lower platen and has an outlet port therein. The outlet port is in fluid communication with at least one of the lower platen openings. A plenum passage provides fluid communication between a plenum inlet and the outlet port.
