    • A data transducer head mounting structure for a height compacted, low power head and disk assembly of a fixed disk data storage subsystem has an elongated load beam including a head arm attachment end region for attachment to an outward end of an acuator head arm; a leaf spring loading region; a flexure attachment region for attachment of a gimbal flexure for mounting a transducer head; a dynamic loading tab formed at the outermost part of the head end region beyond the transducer head; and, a load beam region located between the leaf spring loading region and the dynamic loading tab. In one aspect of the invention a loading ramp structure is positioned adjacent to a peripheral edge of the storage disk and cooperates with the dynamic loading tab. In one independent aspect of the present invention, the load beam region includes two L-shaped flanges facing toward an adjacent data storage surface, and a trussing structure is attached to the outer surfaces of the flanges to enclose the load beam region. In a further aspect, the leaf spring loading region including two parallel outer segments defining a central longitudinal opening which are dimensioned to tune torsional mode resonances while maintaining a predetermined head loading bias force.

    • Formatting disk drive data using format field elements (FFEs). A processing module (which can be a general purpose processor or a RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) processor) is employed to generate FFEs that are employed to govern operation of the various data formatting modules within a formatting system within a HDD. The determination of when a data formatting module stops operating in accordance with a first FFE and begins operating in accordance with a second FFE can be a predetermined period of time, a number of operations being performed, the meeting of some condition, or some other means. Each FFE can be viewed as being a multi-dimensional instruction that not only includes a configuration for a data formatting module, but also includes the conditions by which the configuration is to be governed by a subsequent FFE, among other things.

    • A data transfer system using cassettes with a tape drive is configured with a number of removable cassettes stored in front to rear alignment adjacent one side (e.g. the bottom) of the tape drive. Cassettes in a removable cassette tray in a magazine are disposed in two levels, and shifted between entry and exit regions of the cassette tray after each successive cassette is derived from the tape drive and a new one is supplied. A transporter moves the individual cassette between the cassette tray and the tape drive. Advantageously, this system is configured to fit into the form factor of a standard height enclosure, with a high density DAT format tape drive occupying the upper half and the cassette tray and magazine occupying the lower half.

    • The disk drive system includes an actuator, responsive to an adjustment value, for adjusting the position of a data head with respect to data tracks located on the surface of a disk, and a controller coupled to the data head and to the actuator. The controller receives servo information read from the surface of the disk by the data head. In turn, the controller determines an adjustment value to be applied to the actuator. The adjustment value is calculated dependent on a predetermined variable gain factor. Where the controller determines the position of the heat is oscillating about the center line of a predetermined data track at a frequenc above a predetermined frequency, the controller reduces the gain factor applied in determining the adjustment value.
