    • A fluid cooled seal arrangement for a gas turbine engine including a first sealing element coupled to a mechanical housing of the engine, and a second sealing element connected to a shaft rotatable within the housing. The first and second sealing elements are arranged radially adjacent to one another to form a rubbing interface therebetween. A lubrication system for delivering cooling fluid to the second sealing element through a passageway arranged along the rotating shaft. The cooling fluid is discharged through a plurality of openings formed in one end of the passageway. During normal operation of the engine the centrifugal force from the rotation of the shaft flings the oil radially outward to a channel formed on the underside of the second sealing element. The channel receives the cooling fluid therein, and allows for the escape of the cooling fluid onto the underside of the second sealing element to provide a uniform thickness of cooling fluid thereon. A uniform film of cooling fluid will result in the more uniform transfer of heat from the second sealing element.

    • A vertical heat treating apparatus includes a cap body, which is movable up and down, for sealing a treatment vessel that holds objects to be treated. A rotary loading device is provided with a rotary shaft which extends into a through hole provided in the cap body, and a magnetic fluid seal member is provided around the rotary shaft. Heat-exchange media, such as water or ethylene glycol, is circulated within the rotary shaft, preferably to cool the rotary shaft. A temperature sensor may be provided in a housing for the rotary shaft, such that when the temperature exceeds a set temperature, the flow rate of the heat exchange medium is increased. Baffle plates may be provided above an upper surface of the cap body and opposed to the through-hole in the cap body. In one preferred embodiment of the invention, nitrogen gas is circulated through the through-hole in the cap body to prevent corrosive gas from contacting the shaft. Circumferential grooves are defined around the rotary shaft at locations where the heat exchange medium is admitted and discharged from the rotary shaft. Preferably, the heat exchange medium is circulated in the rotary shaft above and below the level of the magnetic seal.

    • A seal device is adapted to be mounted at an area of relative rotation between two mounting portions of a tire pressure-adjusting device. The seal device includes a pair of first and second seal rings which are disposed in opposed relation to each other. Each of the first and second seal rings includes a main seal of an annular shape having a radially inwardly-directed lip formed on an inner periphery of the main seal, the lip having at its distal end a lip sliding surface to which a self-lubricating thin plate for sliding contact with one of the two mounting portion. Each seal ring further includes an auxiliary seal of an annular shape having a radially inwardly-directed lip which is formed on an inner periphery of the auxiliary seal and is adapted for sliding contact with the one mounting portion, the auxiliary seal being connected to the main seal to form therebetween a closed space for holding grease. A valve is mounted on each of the auxiliary seals for effecting the intake and exhaust of air relative to the closed space.

    • An oil passage connection between a shaft and a clutch drum is sealed by intentionally providing an imbalance in the forces acting on splines mounting the clutch drum to the shaft. The sides of at least some of the splines are angled, so that at least some part of any torque applied between the clutch drum and shaft is resolved into radial components. By providing a differing number of splines, or an asymmetrical positioning of the splines, the net force can be designed to force the sides of the shaft and the clutch drum adjacent to the oil passage tightly together. This is most easily accomplished by simply omitting one or more splines from the clutch drum on either side of the oil passage. With such a structure, the same splines on the shaft can be used to mount gears and the like, which normally require symmetrical distribution of forces.

    • A fluid cylinder has improved wear rings in a combination that includes a tube having a tubular wall and first and second end caps. The tubular wall defines a cylinder bore that has a central axis. Each end cap also has a bore extending along the central axis. A piston assembly is mounted in the cylinder bore with a piston rod mounted in the bore of one of the end caps, so that the piston assembly is slidable along the central axis. The piston assembly includes a piston head that has a reservoir defined by an annular recess opening toward the tubular wall. The reservoir houses a prepacked lubricant. One wear ring closes off the annular recess from the tubular wall. The wear ring seal has a plurality of radial apertures extending therethrough, through which lubricant is capable of flowing to lubricate the piston assembly. Another wear ring closes off a reservoir in the bore of an end cap and functions as the first mentioned wear ring also to lubricate the piston assembly.
