    • An identifier circuit for connection between a telephone system party line and a party line subscriber to permit identification of a calling party line subscriber with automatic number identifying equipment at a central office. The identifier circuit includes a pair of terminals adapted to be selectively connected to ground in accordance with identification of a particular party line subscriber, a pair of normally nonconductive test transistors each connected between one of the terminals and one of the leads of the party line, a pair of control transistors responsive to voltage on the party line to maintain the test transistors nonconductive and responsive to removal of the party line voltage to permit the test transistors to conduct, and a pair of capacitors charged when a calling subscriber goes off hook and discharged to maintain the test transistors conductive for a predetermined time during which testing of the party line to identify the calling subscriber can be accomplished with automatic number identifying equipment at the central office.

    • Methods, systems, and devices are described that provide for directing a voice or video call using least cost dialing. Rules for directing a call may be generated by a server or a mobile device. The rules may be applied at a mobile device, facilitating a least-cost call with little or no input from the user of the mobile device. The rules may be based on identifying information about a caller or an intended call, or both. In determining what constitutes a least-cost option, a number of resources and factors, both monetary and non-monetary, may be considered. In some examples, a call identifier may be sent from a mobile device to a server, and the mobile device may receive, in response, one or more rules for directing a call. The rules may be applied at the mobile device, and the call may be placed accordingly.

    • After description of a number of prior art automatic telephone number identification systems and certain problems associated therewith, a new method and apparatus for use in such systems which overcomes the problems of the prior art is described. In its preferred form, the method includes the steps of applying to the telephone line at a central office a voltage which has a magnitude sufficient to produce a first predetermined value of loop current in the telephone line. At each party station, the loop current is caused to change between the first predetermined value and a second predetermined value in a manner unique to that party station, with the second predetermined value being smaller than the first predetermined value but greater than a value of loop current that would signify to the central office that an on-hook condition exists on the telephone line. At the central office, the loop current change is detected and compared with a plurality of stored loop current changes to provide party station identification, with each stored loop current change being unique to each party station. In a preferred embodiment, these steps occur in a predetermined time sequence, with the loop current changes also occurring at predetermined but distinct time intervals, each of which is unique to a party station. The apparatus for practicing this method includes an automatic party identifier for location at the central office and a subscriber module adapted to be located in circuit with a party station and the telephone line.

    • An automatic number identification system in a tributary office having simultaneous dual operation for high traffic capacity. An identifier unit applying identification signals via a sleeve lead associated with the line of a calling station to multiple inputs of a common directory number network. Each of the multiple inputs corresponds with the directory number of one of the stations of the calling line. Stations associated with the line are inexpensively and quickly modified to provide passive response to a party test initiated by the identifier unit. Positive and negative current detectors connected to the line determine which of the appropriately marked stations is establishing a call, and the corresponding number network input is enabled to receive the identification signals.
