    • An embedded loudspeaker system is set forth incorporating at least two asymmetric enclosures having different but overlapping frequency responses in order to achieve a substantially flat frequency response. At least one of the speaker enclosures is preferably ported (bass-reflex system) to provide as much output as possible in the low-frequency range. By using a plurality of speakers at least one of which has a bass reflex enclosure, a monophonic system is provided with a flat frequency response. The dimensions of the speaker enclosures are chosen such that the anti-resonance of one loudspeaker enclosure is compensated for by the resonance of another speaker enclosure, without making use of damping, so that no “notch” appears in the frequency response of the combined system at the listening position.

    • A multi-function telephone handset comprises a handset body on which is defined a receiving space, and a holding element to which is mounted a receiver and a transmitter. Two opposite portions of the handset body are respectively formed in a receiver part and a transmitter part respectively provided with sound holes. The holding element, with the receiver and the transmitter thereto connected, is detachably placed in the receiving space of the handset body. The telephone handset can be thereby configured to in a manner to perform either a conventional telephonic communication by manually holding the telephone handset, or a hand-free telephonic communication can be achieved by carrying the holding element on the user's head.

    • A hands-free cellular telephone base includes a privacy switch unit having a contact switch and a spring-biased switch actuator. The contact switch is mounted in a housing and is operable to control operation of a control circuit unit between a privacy mode and a broadcast mode. The switch actuator is mounted movably on the housing and is movable from a normal position, where the switch actuator does not actuate the contact switch for operation in the privacy mode, and a pressed position, where the switch actuator actuates the contact switch for operation in the broadcast mode. A magnet member is disposed in the housing such that, when an earphone is disposed adjacent to the switch actuator, the magnet member will attract with the earphone, thereby forcing the switch actuator to the pressed position against biasing action of the spring.

    • A loudspeaking telephone station (speakerphone) includes a loudspeaker and one or more microphones within the same housing. The microphones are directional, each having a polar response characteristic that includes a major lobe, one or more side lobes, and nulls between pairs of lobes. The loudspeaker is positioned in the null of the polar response characteristic that resides between the major lobe and an adjacent side lobe. The microphone apparatus is positioned so that its major lobe is aimed in a direction that is generally perpendicular to the direction that the loudspeaker is aimed. Means are provided for increasing the distance between input sound ports of a first-order-gradient (FOG) microphone and thereby improving its sensitivity. A pair of such improved FOG microphones are used in assembling a second-order-gradient microphone. Full duplex operation is achieved when a pair of echo cancelers are added to further reduce the coupling between the transmit and receive directions of the speakerphone.
