    • Provided is a transmission method that converts an encoded block of data into first complex symbols each including a real component and an imaginary component, one or which is designated as a first component and the other as a second component; writes the first components and the second components of the first complex symbols respectively column by column into a first interleaver matrix and a second interleaver matrix having NR rows; applies a cyclic shift to each column of the second interleaver matrix in accordance with a predetermined shift pattern; and reads the first components from the first interleaver matrix and the second components from the cyclically shifted second interleaver matrix row by row. NR is a multiple of NRF greater than NRF (NRF being an integer greater than one), and the shift pattern for the cyclic shift includes only integers that are not a multiple of NRF.

    • In one embodiment, a communications system has a write path and a read path. In the write path, a local/global interleaver interleaves a user data stream, and an error-correction (EC) encoder encodes the user data stream to generate an EC codeword. A local/global de-interleaver de-interleaves the parity bits of the EC codeword, and both the original un-interleaved user data and the de-interleaved parity bits are transmitted via a noisy channel. In the read path, a channel detector recovers channel soft-output values corresponding to the codeword. A local/global interleaver interleaves the channel values, and an EC decoder decodes the interleaved values to recover the original codeword generated in the write path. A de-multiplexer de-multiplexes the user data from the parity bits. Then, a local/global de-interleaver de-interleaves the user data to obtain the original sequence of user data that was originally received at the write path.

The S2 received sequences have been delivered, before transmission by a two-stage multi-interleaving device, from S1 initial sequences of ordered data samples respectively associated to S1 initial transport channels. The two-stage multi-interleaving device includes a first stage including S1 interleaving blocks respectively associated to the S1 initial transport channels, a second stage including S2 interleaving blocks respectively associated to the S2 physical channels, and an inter-stage of predetermined data-routing functions connected between the first and second stages.
