    • A communication apparatus is provided. The apparatus includes a printed circuit board having a thickness that complies with an intrinsic safety physical separation specification. A first pair of capacitive plates are disposed on opposite sides of the printed circuit board and are arranged to form a first capacitor having an insulating layer of the printed circuit board forming a dielectric material for the first capacitor. A second pair of capacitive plates are disposed on opposite sides of the printed circuit board and are arranged to form a second capacitor having the insulating layer of the printed circuit board forming a dielectric material for the second capacitor. A modulator is coupled to the first and second capacitors and is configured to receive an input signal having an input signal frequency and to provide a modulated signal having a frequency that is higher than the input signal. A demodulator is coupled to the first and second capacitors and configured to detect the modulated signal and provide a demodulated signal having the input signal frequency.

    • A system for generating angular modulation comprising a balanced modulator and an adding circuit to which a surface wave device quadrature oscillator applies two signals at the carrier frequency differing 90.degree. in phase, such phase difference being accurately maintained independent of aging and variations in operating temperatures. More particularly, an information signal is applied to one input of the balanced modulator, the output of which is applied to the adding circuit. The surface wave device oscillator completes the system by applying an in-phase carrier frequency to a second input of the balanced modulator and a carrier frequency shifted 90.degree. in phase to a second input of the adding circuit. Angular modulation is thus produced at the output of the adding circuit.

    • An oscillator in which the "tank circuit" or feedback element is a surface acoustic wave (SAW) bandpass filter (delay line). A modulating voltage is applied from end-to-end of the piezoelectric substrate material to provide an incremental change of physical length of the substrate as a function of the modulating voltage. Two sets of interleaved fingers along a surface face of the substrate provide an interdigital arrangement for launching (electrical to acoustic transition) and receiving (acoustic to electrical transition) the surface acoustic wave.

    • A concatenated surface wave device having delay line capabilities for use in correlating electric signals of various types and forms including analog signals, binary signals, and binary modulated signals, said device including means forming a specially constructed conductive surface pattern over which the signals to be correlated are propagated, said surface pattern including input transducer means at a location where input signals to be correlated are introduced for propagation over the surface, a plurality of tap locations on the surface at spaced locations extending away from the input transducer means, and means for sampling a propagated signal at selected surface locations including at selected ones of said tap locations to determine the locations of places where the signals to be correlated are in agreement and are and are in disagreement. The subject correlator also includes means by which signal components can be introduced at selected tap locations along the device.

    • Apparatus and method for phase-encoding electro-acoustic electro-acoustic elements, elements of an acoustic surface wave device to provide preselected transducer characteristics. By altering the position of a transducer element or portions of a transducer element, the phase of the acoustic wave propagated from, or the phase of the electrical signal received by the transducer element can be varied by an amount determined by the velocity of propagation of the acoustic wave.By altering the location of the electro-elements, or portions thereof, from a position determined for example by amplitude-encoding techniques, a resultant signal produced by a plurality of electro-acoustic elements, element portions, or combination of elements and element portions can provide the preselected transducer characteristics. In addition, the elements or element portions can be located such that the overlap amplitude between adjacent electro-acoustic elements is substantially a constant, providing increased directionality for acoustic waves orignating at the transducer.According to one embodiment, each electro-acoustic transducer can be phase-encoded permitting both an input and an output transducer to be phase-encoded with preselected characteristics.According to a second embodiment, the elements or portions thereof of a first transducer are displaced relative to elements or portions thereof of a second transducer to provide appropriate device phase-encoding.
