    • An integrated starter-generator (ISG) system includes a flux-regulated permanent magnet machine (PMM), a wound-field synchronous machine, and a control coil controller. The flux-regulated PMM includes a stationary portion having a control coil and a plurality of permanent magnets, and a rotating portion that includes rotating armature windings. The wound-field synchronous machine includes a stationary portion that includes a main armature winding and a rotating portion that includes a main field winding that receives excitation from the flux-regulated PMM. The control coil controller controls current supplied to the control coil of the flux-regulated PMM to selectively control magnetic flux presented to the rotating armature windings.

    • A method for operating a multi-phase switched reluctance motor is a generator mode includes gating switches connected in series with selected ones of the phase windings of the motor into conduction to establish current flow in a selected one of the windings. The switches are thereafter disabled and current is forced to commutate into flyback diodes whereby the current is returned to an associated DC bus. The instant at which the conducting switches are gated out of conduction is selected or measured in angular displacement between an associated stator pole and a corresponding rotor pole by establishing a preselected magnitude of current such that when the current in the winding reaches that magnitude, the switches are disabled. The voltage at the DC bus is regulated during generator mode operation by adjusting the phase angle measured between a stator pole and a corresponding rotor pole at which the switches are gated into conduction. The voltage is alternatively regulated at the DC bus by adjusting the phase angle at which the switches are disabled if the generated current does not reach the preselected magnitude. Overcurrent protection is included to reduce the turn-on angle if the current in the DC bus exceeds another preselected magnitude.

    • A permanent magnet (PM) electric generator with directly controllable field excitation control comprises: a drive shaft; a PM rotor assembly with multiple PMs arranged around an outer axial periphery of the rotor assembly; a stator assembly comprising a ferromagnetic stator yoke, multiple ferromagnetic stator teeth mounted to the stator yoke with distal ends proximate the outer axial periphery of the rotor assembly separated by an air gap and multiple stator coils mounted between the stator teeth; multiple saturable ferromagnetic shunts, each shunt coupling adjacent distal ends of the stator teeth to shunt air gap magnetic flux Φg generated by the PMs across the air gap through the distal ends of the stator teeth; and multiple saturation control coils, each saturation control coil wrapped about a saturable region of an associated one of the shunts; wherein application of a control current Ic to the control coils at least partially magnetically saturates the shunts to reduce shunting of air gap magnetic flux Φg, thereby increasing magnetic flux linkage ΨM between the PMs and the stator coils and increasing generated electromagnetic force (EMF) at lower levels of rotor assembly angular velocity.
