    • According to the invention an AC voltage, which is a function of line current, is obtained from each line of a three phase AC source. A half-wave rectifier converts the three AC voltages into three trains of pulses of like polarity. Two different ones of the three trains of pulses are applied to the two inputs of each one of three differential integrating circuits. Each circuit integrates the difference of its inputs and gives an output voltage which is proportional to this difference. The voltages of one polarity are selected from the outputs of the three differential integrating circuits and summed. The level of this sum represents the current imbalance of the source. A level detector may be used to detect this voltage level and initiate a control function in response to a predetermined level. A time delay will usually be provided to delay the control function.

    • A quick acting current limiting, high voltage fuse comprising a tubular casing made of an insulating material; one or more relatively long fusible elements wound helically on an insulating core which is located inside the casing coaxially therewith; a pair of metallic terminals which close the ends of the casing and are connected to the ends of the fusible elements; and a granular arc extinguishing material which completely fills the casing and embeds the elements and core. Each element consists of a very thin, narrow and long strip of a fusible metal such as silver having along its length in one edge a plurality of spaced notches made by cutting out small segments of strip. Each notch appears in outline on the flat side of the strip as an arc of a circle. These notches define regions of reduced cross section for initiating fusion of the strip. Their configuration and arrangement reduces the tendency of the arcs to run together as they enlarge. Their presence also produce a rapid rise in arc voltage, short melting time, and low I2t.

    • A high-voltage circuit breaker comprising a plurality of separate interrupter units connected in series, each unit comprising a set of main contacts, the series combination of a resistor and resistor switch in parallel with the main contacts, and an actuator for operating the main contacts. The actuator of one of these units operates the resistor switch of this particular unit and is mechanically linked with the resistor switches of all the other units so that the contacts of the other resistor switches are closed by the closing action of this one actuator. The resistor switches are opened in synchronism, each one by the actuator of its unit during contacts-opening action. During a circuit interruption, all the main contacts open simultaneously, placing all the resistors in series in the line; a few milliseconds later all the resistor switches open simultaneously to complete the opening cycle. During closing, the main contacts of the one unit close first, after which all the resistor switches close simultaneously, placing the resistors of the other units in series in the line; a few milliseconds later the main contacts of the other units close simultaneously to complete the closing cycle.

    • A drive comprises at least two synchronous motors coupled for driving a load. Each of the motors has an armature winding for producing a rotating magnetic field when energized with alternating current, and a main field winding for producing a multipolar steady state magnetic field when energized with direct current. At least one of the motors also has an auxiliary field winding displaced with respect to the main winding. When energized with direct current the auxiliary winding produces a second multipolar steady state magnetic field having its polar axes displaced with respect to the polar axes of the main field. In one embodiment of the invention, axial slots centrally disposed within the pole piece heads serve to retain one side of two adjacent auxiliary field coils having a span of approximately one pole pitch while in a second embodiment of the invention, one side of the auxiliary field coils extend through a plurality of axial slots in the pole piece head with the other side of the coil being situated between the head and the main field coil disposed about the body of the pole piece. Load sharing is accomplished by varying the relative values of the direct current applied to said main and auxiliary windings of the one motor.
