    • Provided is a solid electrolyte secondary battery with a greater capacity than previous solid electrolyte secondary batteries. Furthermore, the disclosed solid electrolyte secondary battery can obtain a high power output and improve battery function while ensuring a large capacity. The solid electrolyte secondary battery is provided with a cathode chamber, a cathode active material container that is provided independently and stores some cathode active material, and a channel medium that is provided between the two and through which the active material passes. The cathode active material is transferred by the channel medium and heterogeneity, when the active material is discharged, can be curbed. By providing a transfer medium, which transfers the cathode active material, the cathode active material can be forcibly transferred.

    • For a cylindrical sodium sulfur cell, a cathode electrode structure is provided with improved electronic conductivity in the radial direction, compared with other directions, by forming a block of fibre material, e.g. graphite fibres, with the fibres aligned in one direction, slicing the block to form a sheet with fibres normal to the plane of the sheet, moulding the sheet and impregnating it with cathodic reactant in a heated mould having a plurality of ribs, to form a plurality of trapezoidal segments with the fibres normal to the planes of the parallel surfaces of the trapezoids, cooling the mould so that the impregnant is solidified and then forming the trapezoids into an annular structure. Preferably the mould is such that thin webs are left joining adjacent trapezoidal sections along parallel edges of the wider of the two parallel faces so that the webs form hinges for folding the segments into the annular assembly.

    • An improved secondary battery or cell of the type having: (A) one or more anodic reaction zones; (B) one or more cathodic reaction zones (C) a cation-permeable barrier to mass liquid transfer interposed between and in contact with said anodic and cathodic reaction zones; and (D) an electrode which is disposed within said cathodic reaction zone. The improvement comprises employing an electrode, at least a portion of which consists essentially of a porous metal substrate which (i) is coated, at least in part, with an oxide of a metal selected from the group consisting of: (a) metals of Groups I, II and III of the Periodic Table of elements, (b) Transition Series metals, and (c) tin, lead, antimony and bismuth to a thickness which is greater than about 500 angstroms, but which results in said electrode portion having a resistivity of less than about 4 ohm-cm.sup.2, (ii) does not fill the entire volume of said cathodic reaction zone, and (iii) is, at least in part, adjacent to and contiguous with said cation-permeable barrier.
