    • A relay comprising an electromagnetic coil wound on an insulating bobbin, the central cavity of which encloses a central spring-biased contact actuated by a magnetic armature in response to energization of the coil, to make or break contact with one or more fixed contacts also enclosed. A U-shaped member and a heel plate, both of highly magnetically permeable material, surround the coil and complete the magnetic circuit for flux generated by the coil. The magnetic armature is constructed and arranged such that it is accessible from the exterior of the enclosed relay to adjust the position of the spring-biased contact of the relay after it is assembled to conform with the desired level of voltage required to actuate the relay.

    • An electro-magnetically operated device is described in which a magnetisable armature, typically a length of thin naturally resilient mild steel, is sandwiched between, and extends from, two parts of a magentic circuit which contains an air gap into which the armature extends. An electromagnet polarizes the armature along its length so as to cause the end thereof in the air gap to be attached to one or the other of the two poles of the magnetic circuit defining the gap. The armature is designed so as to be capable of adopting a mid-position between the poles of the air gap if the curent flowing in the electromagnet is reduced to zero. Equalising the air gaps and adjusting the size of the gap relative to the resilience of the armature will produce a bistable characteristic in which the armature will not remain in the mid-position, but will always remain in contact with one pole or the other, and is shifted from one to the other by a pulse of current of appropriate polarity. Adjustment of the size of the air gap on one side or the other of the armature introduces an out of balance in the magnetic circuit enabling the device to adopt a monostable characteristic instead of a bistable characteristic.

    • A relay having a coil body with two contact spaces extending parallel to the coil body axis is provided with two tongue armatures arranged oppositely in parallel fashion through the contact spaces. The coil body has coil flanges at the opposite ends and the tongue armatures are plugged into the contact space from opposite one of the coil flanges to extend to an air gap between pairs of pole pieces arranged at the other coil flange. The pole pieces are arranged in pairs adjacent the terminal end of the other tongue armature. On each of the pairs of pole pieces is a flat four-pole permanent magnet having two outside poles coupled to a contact end of the appertaining tongue armature via a flux plate. The permanent magnet areas which are allocated individually to each pole piece to enable independent balancing to be performed so that synchronous switching of the tongue armatures is achieved.

    • A polarized electromagnetic relay has an armature extending through an axial opening in a coil body, a free end of the armature being switchable between two planar pole plates. The pole plates each have pole members disposed opposite one another and each further have top and bottom stop tabs received in spacer members which are a part of a flange of the coil body. Each pole plate with the pole members and stop tabs is stamped in a single cutting from sheet material. By positioning the stop tabs within the spacer members, a precise contact spacing between the two pole plates is insured with a low tolerance during assembly.

    • A polarized electromagnetic relay has a coil core body comprised of insulating material having a ferromagnetic movable contact element disposed in a hollow interior thereof, the movable contact element having a free end movable between two pole plates which are mounted in a flange of said coil body and which enclose a permanent magnet in a chamber of the coil body. The movable contact element is secured at its opposite end to a carrier which forms a ferromagnetic flux guidance plate extending substantially through the entire interior of the coil which is wound about the coil body and which terminates in close proximity to the pole plates.
