    • An actuating mechanism for a plunger-type switch having alternative open and closed conditions and having a plunger movable between an extended position and a retracted position whereby said switch condition is changed by the movement of said plunger comprises a flat spring, having a first spring end, a second spring end and a middle portion, and a housing having an upper surface wherein the plunger-type switch and spring are positioned within the housing such that the first spring end is positioned in closely spaced relation to the plunger in the extended position and the middle portion of the spring bows above the housing upper surface such that application of a force to the middle portion of the spring and directed towards the housing upper surface compresses the spring advancing the spring first end toward the switch a distance sufficient to move the plunger to the retracted position and upon removal of the force the first spring end advances away from the switch a distance sufficient to allow the plunger to move to the extended position.

    • An electrical switch element, particularly a relay, is provided with an actuator with a switch contact and a switch mechanism. The switch mechanism translates a driving movement of the actuator into a switching movement of the switch contact so that the switch contact is brought into and out of contact with a mating contact. In order to create a switching movement with a large lift in the case of an actuator which can only execute a driving movement with small lift, the switch mechanism has two swivelling levers connected to each other via the actuator and at least one contact retainer. The contact retainer connects the two swivelling levers in its longitudinal direction with a lever arm larger than the actuator and is configured so it can be deflected transverse to its longitudinal direction.

    • A micromechanical micromotion amplifier has an integrated structure formed primarily of silicon and comprises a plurality of long slender flexible beams which are connected in a predetermined manner. The beams are released from a silicon substrate for movement with respect to fixed points of reference upon the substrate. Each beam thereby has a fixed end and a relatively moveable free end. Compressive axial force induced by axial movement, applied to the moveable end of a beam, will cause that beam to deform or buckle. Buckling occurs transversely in-plane due to a high aspect ratio profile of each beam. The amount of lateral or transverse movement of a beam due to buckling is relatively large in relation to the applied axial force or axial movement which causes it. By arranging these beams in cooperating perpendicular pairs as micromotion amplifier stages, an input axial force/movement applied to the moveable free end of a first beam generates a transverse motion or buckling movement of that beam.

    • A switch assembly includes a base, a flat spring, a switch, and an actuating member. The base includes a central channel. The flat spring may be pivotally secured to a portion of the base. The switch is proximate the flat spring, and is configured to selectively open and close a circuit, such as an ignition circuit of a vehicle. The actuating member is positioned through the central channel and abuts the flat spring. The actuating member is configured to be engaged toward the flat spring in order to activate the switch, wherein movement of the actuating member in a first direction causes the flat spring to move in a second direction into the switch to activate the switch. The first direction may be perpendicular to the second direction.

    • A mechanical amplification structure has a pair of L-shaped lever arms mounted for rotational motion about individually associated pivot points on a frame. An elongated transducer (e.g. piezoelectric or electrostrictive) expands or contracts responsive to electrical signals, the transducer being coupled to swing the lever arms about the pivot points. Thus an excursion distance between the swinging ends of the lever arms is equal to the expansion or contraction of the transducer multiplied by an effective length of the lever arms. An elastic support is coupled between the swinging ends of the arms to experience controlled mechanical excursions responsive to the electrical signals. A mechanical actuator is mounted on the elastic support for giving a mechanical action in response to an operation of the actuator means. As shown, the actuator is a printing needle in one embodiment and a relay contact in another embodiment.
