摘要： This invention generally concerns robotic systems and is specifically concerned with an improved apparatus and method for inspecting nuclear reactor components in limited access areas, such as, the core annulus, core spray and feedwater sparger regions of a nuclear reactor. This invention includes an apparatus for remotely operating and positioning at least one inspection device for inspecting at least one component in an annulus region of a reactor pressure vessel of a nuclear power plant. The apparatus includes a track, a braking system and a frame assembly which has a frame movably connected to the track, at least one mast assembly and at least one mast positioning assembly. The at least one inspection device is attached to the at least one mast assembly. In certain embodiments, the at least one mast assembly includes a mast that is capable of becoming rigidly stable in both an extended tube form and a retracted rolled form.

摘要： A method and an apparatus for ultrasonically inspecting the welds which attach the differential pressure and liquid poison nozzles to the bottom head of the reactor pressure vessel in a boiling water reactor. The scanning apparatus is seated on the upper taper of the nozzle outer tube and incorporates a stationary frame having a cutaway section which allows installation from the side. The apparatus has vertical and circumferential positioning mechanisms which are operated remotely to scan an ultrasonic transducer package over the circumferential welds and heat-affected zones thereof. The rotating frame has a transducer carriage mounted thereon which is vertically displaceable relative to the rotating frame. The vertical and angular motion motors can be controlled together to provide the desired path for the ultrasonic transducer around the stub tube. The tool also includes a vessel contour follower which follows the contour of the inclined surfaces of the reactor pressure vessel bottom head. The vessel contour follower is linked to the ultrasonic transducer to ensure that the transducer follows the contour of the weld, in position and angle.

摘要： A method for cleaning inlet mixers while they remain in their operating position within a nuclear reactor. A water-powered cleaning tool is inserted by remote control into the inlet mixer via a secondary inlet opening. Following insertion of the cleaning tool, the internal surfaces of the inlet mixer are cleaned with a waterjet created from an ultra-high-pressure source and directed by controlled positioning of a cleaning head having an nozzle which scans the cleaning waterjet across the surface to be cleaned. The cleaning system for carrying out the method includes a nozzle cleaning tool, a throat/barrel/flare cleaning tool, pumping systems for supplying ultra-high-pressure equal to at least 20,000 psi and low-pressure water to an installed cleaning tool, a launching system located at the top of the opened reactor vessel for feeding the water conduits (power), control cables, monitoring cables (instrument) and cleaning tool into and out of the inlet mixer, and a computerized process monitoring and control system.

摘要： Apparatus for repositioning garter springs around the pressure tubes of Candu-type nuclear reactors. A primary coil having a high permeability core is inserted into the pressure tube. The coil is energized by an alternating current of a frequency and amplitude sufficient to produce a primary alternating electromagnetic field that penetrates the wall and induces an eddy current in the garter spring. A secondary alternating electromagnetic field is also produced and is reactive with the primary field to produce a travelling electromagnetic field of sufficient intensity and of such direction that the resultant of the electromagnetic forces acting on the garter spring causes the spring to move along the tube.

摘要： Reversible fuel assembly grid tab repair tool having a tab bending member for remotely reforming fuel assembly grid tabs, wherein the tool has means for fine alignment of the tab bending member with the grid tab to be reformed. The grid tabs may be formed on the top and bottom edges of a grid strap which wraps a plurality of fuel rods disposed in the fuel assembly. The repair tool comprises a generally L-shaped frame having a vertical first leg and a horizontal second leg. Extending from the terminal end of the second leg is an alignment blade capable of being interposed between two fuel rods adjacent each side of the grid tab to be reformed. Attached to the top surface of the second leg at the terminus thereof is an anvil block having an anvil surface for bending the grid tab thereagainst when the grid tab is interposed between the anvil surface and the tab bending member. Extending from the anvil surface are a plurality of register pins capable of abutting the top and bottom edges of the grid strap for fine alignment of the tab bending member with the grid tab. A lever member pivotally connected to the repair tool is capable of translating the grid tab bending member towards the anvil surface for bending the grid tab against the anvil surface when the grid tab is interposed between the tab bending member and the anvil surface.

摘要： A punch mechanism for remote removal of guide balls from nuclear reactor control rods, includes attachment means for attaching the punch mechanism to means for reversibly lowering the punch mechanism over the top of one of the control rods. The mechanism includes a die and cylinder means operatively connected to the die for axially moving the die in a back-and-forth direction, a die block cooperating with the die, and guide means for self-aligning the punch mechanism so that the die and the die block are automatically aligned with one of the guide balls therebetween when the punch mechanism is lowered over the top of the control rod. When the punch mechanism is lowered into aligned position, activation of the cylinder means will cause the die to advance into the die block, thereby removing the guide ball from the control rod. The punch mechanism is then remotely raised above the control rod, rotated 90 degrees, and lowered to repeat the ball removal procedure. Two more repetitions effect removal of all four balls from the control rod. The procedure may be carried out while the control rod is positioned in a spent fuel pool. The rod may then be removed for crushing.
