    • A mixing apparatus for a plurality of turbulently flowing fluid flows varying in temperature and/or composition includes a mixing chamber having a non-circular or predetermined cross section and a straight or curved center line. A plurality of single-conduit and parallel or radial deflector elements are disposed beside the mixing chamber and staggered in the direction of the center line. The deflector elements receive a fluid flow being oriented at an angle relative to the center line and staggered laterally. The deflector elements deflect the fluid flow tangentially into the mixing chamber. The mixing chamber has an outlet opening for the exit of a mixed fluid flow. In a gas-cooled, high-temperature nuclear reactor with a circular outline, the mixing apparatus has a horizontal, annular mixing chamber with a plurality of sectors. Horizontal annular conduits receive at least one fluid flow. A plurality of vertical conduits are disposed above the sectors and have upper ends connected to the horizontal annular conduits and lower ends connected to the mixing chamber. An outlet opening communicates with the mixing chamber. The sectors havie a plurality of bores formed therein in the vicinity of the outlet opening for receiving absorber material.

    • In a nuclear reactor having the fuel disposed within a large number of pressure tubes fed in parallel with liquid coolant which is partly vaporized while flowing through the pressure tubes, the invention provides a coolant-supply header assembly comprising parallel-extending sub-header pipes which at their ends are connected by end pipes and which have water outlets (for connection to the individual pressure tubes) distributed along their lengths, and header pipes each extending transversely across the sub-header pipes at spaced intervals therealong and having a water inlet and a plurality of branch pipes each of which connects to a respective one of the sub-header pipes.Preferably, a plurality of main coolant circuits are provided, each including such a header assembly, and the fuel in each pressure tube is cooled not only by the main coolant flow from one of the header assemblies but also by spray cooling utilizing coolant drawn from another of the coolant circuits, with each circuit maintaining a balance between coolant received as spray cooling in its own pressure tubes and coolant drawn off for spray cooling of other pressure tubes.

    • A metal conduit assembly for interconnecting the discharge duct of the pump and the inlet coolant duct or reactor core in a pool-type nuclear reactor. The conduit assembly comprises an upper section for connection to the discharge of a reactor pump, a lower section for connection with the coolant inlet duct with reactor core and a third intermediate tubular section for interconnecting the other two sections. Joint means are provided for interconnecting one end of the intermediate section with an adjoining end at the upper section and an opposite end of the intermediate section with an adjoining end of the lower section. The joint means comprises a male portion having a ridge provided with a circumferential groove for receiving a seal means and an associated female portion having an inside diameter greater than that of the ridge for receiving said male portion and a seal means. A key aspect of the conduit assembly is the seal means which comprises a split cylindrical piston ring having overlapping ends to provide for radial expansion and compression of the seal means.
