    • A fusion power generating device is disclosed having a relatively small and inexpensive core region which may be contained within an energy absorbing blanket region. The fusion power core region contains apparatus of the toroidal type for confining a high density plasma. The fusion power core is removable from the blanket region and may be disposed and/or recycled for subsequent use within the same blanket region. Thermonuclear ignition of the plasma is obtained by feeding neutral fusible gas into the plasma in a controlled manner such that charged particle heating produced by the fusion reaction is utilized to boot-strap the device to a region of high temperatures and high densitities wherein charged particle heating is sufficient to overcome radiation and thermal conductivity losses. The high density plasma produces a large radiation and particle flux on the first wall of the plasma core region thereby necessitating replacement of the core from the blanket region from time to time. A series of potentially disposable and replaceable central core regions are disclosed for a large-scale economical electrical power generating plant.

    • An apparatus and method are disclosed for machine-replaceable plasma-facing tiles for fusion power reactor environments. The apparatus and method involve a tile that is fish scale shaped, and a tile support tube that is attached to the back portion of the tile. The tile support tube includes at least one coolant channel and at least one guard vacuum channel. In one or more embodiments, the method for removing the tile comprises providing a tile that is installed in a manifold channel of a first wall of a fusion power reactor, rotating the tile such that it is in an install/removal orientation, inserting two tines of a removal tool between the outer edges of the tile and the first wall of the fusion power reactor, rotating the removal tool such that the two tines grasp the tile support tube, and lifting the tile away from the wall with the removal tool.

    • The first wall of a deuterium-tritium fusion reactor is regenerated in situ. The first wall substantially surrounds an enclosed reaction region confined within the reaction chamber of the reactor. To regenerate a worn first wall without opening the reactor chamber, a gaseous substance is introduced into the chamber, at least a portion of the gaseous substance comprising material, such as low Z refractory material, suitable for forming the first wall. At least a portion of this material is deposited, as by pyrolysis, in solid form on the first wall to regenerate the first wall, and residual gas is removed from the chamber. The chamber is then recharged with a mixture of deuterium and tritium. All the while the inflow of contaminants into the chamber is substantially excluded. Preferably, the pyrolysis of the gaseous substance is effected by energizing the coils used in the operation of the reactor for producing a plasma of deuterium and tritium ions in the reaction chamber.
