    • A magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus includes a servo head amplifier, including first and second signal processors, comparator circuit, and tape speed controller. The first signal processor processes a first signal read from first servo device into a third signal, and the second signal processor processes a second signal read from second servo device into a fourth signal. The comparator circuit compares the third and fourth signals. If a signal output difference exists, the tape speed controller changes the magnetic tape transport speed, so that a signal is recorded to form a signal track with constant width. Therefore, it is possible to provide a magnetic head capable of stably recording signals to form signal tracks with constant width using servo technology, a magnetic recording apparatus including the magnetic head, and a magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus which can stably record signals to form signal tracks with constant width and restrict variations in reproduction signals.

    • There is provided a reproducing apparatus arranged to reproduce an information signal from a recording medium on which a number of recording tracks are formed in parallel with each other and the information signal is recorded on the recording tracks together with track number information indicative of numbers of the respective tracks, a pilot signal component being multiplexed onto the information signal periodically at intervals of a predetermined number of tracks. When the information signal is to be reproduced from the recording medium, the reproducing apparatus executes tracking control of the reproducing head with respect to a target track, by using the pilot signal component contained in a signal reproduced by a reproducing head. The reproducing apparatus determines the target track according to the track number information separated from the signal reproduced by the reproducing head. According to the above-described arrangement, it is possible to execute correct tracking control quickly after the start of reproduction. In addition, since the track number information recorded on the recording medium in a multiplexed manner is effectively utilized, it is not necessary to provide a special circuit for determining the target track.

    • Information is divided into first blocks each having m bits, and n bit or bits in each of S different states are added to a head of each of the first blocks to change the first block into S second blocks each having m+n bits, where m and n denote predetermined natural numbers and S denotes a predetermined natural number equal to or smaller than 2.sup.n. Each of the S second blocks is pre-coded into S pre-coded information blocks respectively. The modulation-resultant information signal has q different notch frequencies. The S pre-coded information blocks are converted into S amplitude signals representing amplitude values respectively. A set of q first waveform signals and a set of q second waveform signals are generated. The q first waveform signals represent waveforms related to the q notch frequencies respectively. The q second waveform signals are different in phase from the q first waveform signals by 90.degree. respectively. Each of the S amplitude signals and the 2q waveform signals are multiplied into 2q multiplication-resultant signals. The 2q multiplication-resultant signals are added and accumulated into 2q addition-resultant signals respectively with respect to each of the S pre-coded information blocks. An error signal is generated in response to the 2q addition-resultant signals, and thereby the S error signals are generated which relate to the S pre-coded information blocks respectively.
