    • An active muffler for use in motor vehicles comprises a sensor, an electronic control responsive to the signal generated by the sensor for producing a drive signal delivered to a transducer which emits cancellation pulses phased 180.degree. from the sound pressure pulses passing through a conduit, where both front and rear sides of the transducer are acoustically coupled to the conduit to improve the efficiency of the transducer operation. Preferably, the acoustic coupling comprises an enclosed chamber including a port for communicating with the conduit which can be tuned to resonate at predetermined frequencies. When both sides of the transducer are so coupled to the conduit, the transducer has increased efficiency over a broad band of frequencies, and the frequency band can be broadened at the low end as required to accommodate the frequencies generated by a source of noise. A tandem transducer mounting arrangement according to the present invention reduces vibration of the housing. The system is particularly suitable for use in adapting noise cancellation techniques to replace passive mufflers on motor vehicles.

    • A transducer arrangement for active noise cancellation in conduits, for example, in motor vehicles where an electronic control produces a drive signal for a transducer that emits cancellation pulses phased 180.degree. from the sound pressure pulses passing through an exhaust conduit, where both front and rear sides of the transducer are acoustically coupled to improve the efficiency of the transducer operation. Preferably, the acoustic coupling comprises an enclosed chamber partitioned to expose a first transducer side to a chamber portion and a second transducer side to a second chamber portion. A first port couples one of the chambers to the other and a second port couples one of the chambers to the conduit. Each port for communicating with the conduit can be tuned to resonate at predetermined frequencies. When both sides of the transducer are so coupled to the conduit, the transducer has increased efficiency over a band of frequencies, to accommodate the frequencies generated by a source of noise while limiting access of fluid or heat in the conduit to the transducer. A tandem transducer mounting arrangement according to the present invention reduces vibration of the housing. The system is particularly suitable for use in adapting noise cancellation techniques to replace or combine with passive mufflers on motor vehicles.

    • An active attenuation system is provided for attenuating the pressure pulses in a liquid flowing in a pipe. The system includes an actuator for introducing nulling pressure pulses into the pipeline having the same frequency, but phase reversed to provide opposite amplitude of the pressure pulses to be attenuated. A plurality of pressure sensors are disposed in the pipe to sense the pressure pulses to be attenuated and these sensors are connected to a pressure transducer amplifier system which, in turn, is electrically connected to a control monitor which adaptively models the responses and continuously adjusts its output to a power amplifier which, in turn, signals the actuator to produce nulling pulses at the desired frequency and amplitude to attenuate the pressure pulses at a desired location, i.e. headbox or pipeline termination, in the liquid flowing through the pipe.

    • A device for reducing certain sound ranges of tire/road surface noise of a motor vehicle includes sound absorbers in the form of resonators positioned at the inner wall of a wheel well of the vehicle in the area of sound projection of the tire/road surface noise. The device has an electronic control device for receiving a signal preferably derived from an ABS system in the form of the wheel rpm. The control device adjusts the resonators according to the number of tread blocks of the tire, the sound emission characteristics, and the wheel rpm. In another embodiment the electronic control device is supplied with signals received from a sound receiver that records the course over time of the sound pressure. The control device adjusts the resonators such that the measured sound pressure signal is minimized. In another alternative the device has a data processing unit including an electronic control device. The control device is supplied with a signal from sound receiving devices that record the course over time of the sound pressure. The data processing unit together with an adjusting device adjusts the resonators such that the measured sound pressure signal for selected frequency ranges is minimized.

    • An electronic muffling device is disclosed for suppressing the noise emitted by an outlet of an exhaust pipe of an engine. The device comprises a housing having an outlet and a plurality of audio transducers. The transducers supply anti-noise to cancel detected unwanted noise. A microphone appropriately positioned to detect residual noise is coupled to a cancellation signal generator, which controls the anti-noise generated by the transducers. Anti-noise and unwanted engine noise propagate through a front volume within the housing so that exhaust gases are transmitted through the housing, but engine noise is canceled before leaving the housing. Exhaust gas may be transmitted into the housing, or may be passed through the housing without leaving the exhaust pipe. In either embodiment, engine noise enters the front volume and is canceled.
