    • A gas discharge display apparatus comprises at least a number of anodes and cathodes each disposed in opposition to each of the anodes so that the anodes and the cathodes are arrayed alternately with each other. The anodes and the cathodes are wired, respectively, in polyphase connections. Discharge stabilizing resistors are connected in series to the polyphase connections leading to either the anodes or cathodes. Pulse voltages are successively applied to the anodes and the cathodes so that the discharge produced between both electrodes is caused to perform self-scanning, while the pulse voltages are applied to the polyphase connections leading to the anodes during a period determined in accordance with an input signal to be displayed, thereby to produce discharge between selected ones of anodes and cathodes determined in accordance with the input signal, said discharge being imparted with a memory effect. By controlling pulse duration of the pulse voltages applied during the period determined by the input signal, brightness of display element(s) selected in accordance with the input signal is controlled in a rather arbitrary manner.

    • The panel driven by the circuit of the invention comprises essentially two display devices in a single gas-filled envelope. The panel comprises a left-hand portion including an array of rows and columns of scanning or priming cells and an array of rows and columns of display cells which are vertically aligned with each other, with each scanning cell communicating with a display cell. Electrode arrays are provided for operating the left-hand scanning cells and display cells in scanning fashion, column-by-column. The right-hand portion of the panel includes an identical arrangement of scanning cells, display cells, and electrode arrays therefor.A panel of this type is particularly suitable for displaying 80 characters or so, and, in order to achieve favorable brightness in all of the cells of the panel, the two portions of the panel are operated simultaneously. The panel is operated by energizing the two sets of scanning cells sequentially, column-by-column, and, as the columns of scanning cells are energized, selected display anodes are energized by information signals to transfer glow from a scanning cell to the display cell above it.

    • The display panel includes a base plate which carries a plurality of pairs of scanning cathodes and display cathodes, oriented in columns, and insulating spacers which, in each pair, separate the scanning and display cathodes into operative pairs, with the pairs being arrayed in rows and columns. The panel also includes a face plate which carries a plurality of anode strips, oriented in rows, each strip overlaying and having a portion in operative relation with a row of scanning and display cathode pairs. In each pair of cathodes, only the display cathode is visible to a viewer. The face plate and base plate are sealed together to form an envelope which is filled with a gas suitable for supporting cathode glow.In one mode of operation of the panel, each column of scanning cathodes is energized at a relatively low level, and then selected display cathodes in the associated column are energized at viewing level. Then, the same column of scan cathodes is re-energized, and glow is then transferred to the next adjacent column of scan cathodes where the cycle is repeated. This operation is carried out through the columns of scan and display cathodes in the panel sequentially at such a rate that a changeable but apparently stationary message is displayed by the total number of display cathodes energized.

    • The disclosure is of a display panel comprising a gas-filled envelope having a first portion including an array of D.C. gas discharge cells, and a second portion including an array of quasi A.C. gas discharge cells, there being one A.C. cell for each D.C. cell. The A.C. cells are the display cells of the panel and include electrode means for sustaining glow therein, and the D.C. cells are operated in a scanning fashion to address selected A.C. cells in which glow is to be displayed, and they include electrode means for this purpose. The actual operation of addressing or selecting, and firing or turning off, the desired A.C. display cells is achieved by the controlled interaction of the D.C. and A.C. cells; and after the selected display cells have been fired and caused to exhibit visible glow, the glow is sustained, until being erased, by the electrodes associated with the A.C. cells.

    • A computer terminal for providing a visual display of linguistic characters in response to character data information from an external computer. The computer display terminal can be semipermanently configured in response to externally supplied configuration information. The terminal includes a microprocessor unit formed by a microprocessor, a ROM for instruction codes and a RAM for temporary data storage. A data communications channel interfaces with the microprocessor unit, receives the character information from the external computer, and provides such information to the microprocessing unit for storage in its RAM. A CRT or other display interfaces with the microprocessor unit and visually displays character information stored in the RAM. A keyboard or other input interfaces with the microprocessor unit and provides a means for inputting externally supplied terminal configuration information. An EAROM interfaces with the microprocessor unit and semipermanently stores configuration information received therefrom. The EAROM is an electrically alterable memory, is non-destructive at power off, and supplies its stored configuration information to the microprocessor unit upon demand. The microprocessor unit of the display terminal also interfaces with an external printer for providing hard copies, an external magnetic card reader for providing an additional input device, and an external magnetic tape unit for providing an additional input/output device.

    • An improved cathode assembly for a gas discharge display panel is disclosed providing a first series of cathode elements in a first direction and a second series of cathode elements in a second direction. A separate "keep-alive" element and "initiate signal" element are also provided. The keep-alive element maintains a localized source of ionized gas at all times. Upon activation of the initiate signal element, the ionized gas moves from the keep-alive element to the initiate signal element. The first direction elements are then sequentially activated to cause the ionized gas to pass from the initiate signal element sequentially to each of the first direction elements until the selected first direction element has been reached. The second direction elements are then sequentially activated to cause the ionized gas to pass from the selected first direction cathode element to the second direction cathode elements in sequence until the selected second direction element has been reached. As employed in a multi-layer display, when the ionized gas has reached the selected first-second coordinate on the cathode assembly, normal addressing of the anode and/or cathode elements within the gas discharge display panel can be initiated to cause the desired panel illumination to take place. An insulated spacer defining channels is used in the cathode assembly to guide the gas discharge along the desired path, being so shaped as to prevent the ionized gas from moving out of the selected first direction coordinate along the second direction cathode element.
