    • A spherical electronic display is disclosed that includes a spherical display screen that is able to display electronically generated images on its surface using electronic display technology included in the surface, and an electronic control unit in communication with the spherical display screen, the electronic control unit being able to cause the spherical display screen to display images. The electronically controlled spherical display uses low energy display technology, such as LCD and/or OLED electronics, included within the spherical surface. This approach avoids the need to project images onto a spherical screen, and thereby avoids any need for high energy optical projectors and their associated costs and maintenance requirements. The spherical display is connectable to an electronic control unit that can be located either within the sphere or within a support base. The electronic control unit can be a conventional computer or a self-contained, dedicated controller.

    • A motor driven globe disposed on a support surface. The globe includes a rotating globe shell and a rotation mechanism configured to rotate the shell about a vertical axis of rotation. The rotation mechanism includes a motor concealed inside the rotating shell and a support platform disposed on the support surface and substantially concealed inside a recess formed in an outside surface of the rotating shell. An output shaft aligned with the axis of rotation connects the motor inside the interior of the rotating shell to the support platform. The motor includes a motor body nonrotatably coupled to the interior of the rotating shell. Surface interaction forces between the support platform and support surface are greater than or equal to a rotational drive force generated by the motor and applied to the output shaft causing the motor body and the rotating shell coupled thereto to rotate about the output shaft.

    • A spherical world globe (4) with geographic features imprinted on its surface rotates on an axis (2) through the poles. The sphere is not large enough to carry legible details of all areas. Greater details are stored in a memory (12′) such as a compact disc. An indicator (8) on the sphere is positionable north and south or the sphere is positionable relative to a fixed indicator to position the indicator along a north/south meridian. A sensor (11′) senses the north/south position of the indicator and sends a signal to a control circuit (19) connected to the memory. Another sensor (10′) connected to the rotation of the sphere sends an east/west signal to the control circuit. Using the two signals, the circuit finds the area corresponding to the area selected on the sphere in the memory and displays it on a display in greater detail than is visible on the sphere.

The globe is configured to rotate within the frame. The internal, that is self-contained, drive mechanism uses either a conventional electrical motor (8) with its own field winding and commutator, or one made of a rotor comprising a cross-array of electromagnets (AC, BD) that interact with an ambient magnetic field such as the earth magnetic field. The power supply comes preferably from a photovoltaic collector (13) mounted within the inner sphere or from a receiver (27) of RF waves or other EM radiation.
