    • Techniques described herein overcome many of the issues that have previously made the printing of a single copy of a book from a digital version unattractive and infeasible. According to one embodiment of the invention, an automated mechanism such as a computer program automatically determines whether the spine thickness of a to-be-printed copy of a digital version of a book will exceed the specified maximum spine thickness that a specified binding or other finishing device can handle. In response to determining that the spine thickness will exceed the specified maximum spine thickness, the automated mechanism automatically splits the digital version of the book into two or more volumes such that, for each volume, the spine thickness of the printed version of that volume will be no greater than the specified maximum spine thickness that the specified binding or other finishing device can handle.

    • An image processing system capable of checking whether or not an image is correctly read, and of easily correcting an image which is not correctly read is provided. The image processing system includes: an image processing apparatus A which has a reading section 105, an image processing section 110 for performing image processing of a read image, and a metadata generating section 106 for generating metadata for an abnormal image; a storage server B which stores the image and the metadata outputted from the image processing apparatus A; and an image checking apparatus C which checks whether or not the metadata is included in the image acquired from the storage server B, and which when the metadata is included in the acquired image, displays the image on the basis of the metadata, and corrects the acquired image. The image processing system is capable of correcting only the abnormal image, without re-reading all the images.

    • A multi-mode copying apparatus includes a contact glass on which an original is placed facing downward, a scanning unit for scanning along the contact glass, a photosensitive drum, imaging unit for forming a copy image on the drum, at least one cassette for storing therein a quantity of copy sheets, a size detector for detecting the length of the copy sheets stored in the cassette, and a control system for controlling the operation of the apparatus in accordance with the length information detected by the size detector. In one mode of operation, the control system divides the original surface into two original surface sections, i.e., left and right half sections, based on the length information supplied from the size detector, and copies are produced from at least one of the left and right half sections using a home position of the scanning unit as a reference for each copying operation.
