    • Embodiments of the invention provide apparatuses and methods for phase correlated seeding of parametric mixer and for generating coherent frequency combs. The parametric mixer may use two phase-correlated optical waves with different carrier frequencies to generate new optical waves centered at frequencies differing from the input waves, while retaining the input wave coherent properties. In the case when parametric mixer is used to generate frequency combs with small frequency pitch, the phase correlation of the input (seed) waves can be achieved by electro-optical modulator and a single master laser. In the case when frequency comb possessing a frequency pitch that is larger than frequency modulation that can be affected by electro-optic modulator, the phase correlation of the input (seed) waves is achieved by combined use of an electro-optical modulator and injection locking to a single or multiple slave lasers.

    • Technology for constructing a single layer polarization insensitive electrically switchable liquid crystal mirror is disclosed which serves as the basic element for constructing an optical router switch array in free space as well as waveguide format. The optical router switch array includes a plurality of switchable liquid crystal mirror elements having liquid crystal arranged in stack cells and/or in a waveguide configuration. The resulted optical router switches are motionless, polarization insensitive, stable within the operational spectral region, and stable versus temperature. The invention also includes methods for manufacturing a single switchable liquid crystal mirror element and the optical switch arrays. The same technology is further extended to constructing an electrically tunable optical filter that is motionless and polarization insensitive.

    • The electro-optical telemetr system of the present invention includes a laser, polarizer and analyzer elements and a Kerr cell modulator containing a parallel plate transmission line immersed in a birefringent liquid such as nitrobenzene. The modulating signal is applied to the parallel plate transmission line which is terminated in its characteristic impedance. Preferably, the laser beam is directed into the modulator at an angle equal to WHERE N AND E ARE THE INDEX OF REFRACTION AND THE DIELECTRIC COEFFICIENT, RESPECTIVELY, OF THE BIREFRINGENT LIQUID. Two parallel mirrored surfaces may be used to make the laser beam traverse the modulator a plurality of times. An environmental chamber containing a liquid bath and a thermo-electrical control system may be utilized to maintain the temperature of the modulator at a predetermined point. The Kerr cell modulator may also be biased by a bias voltage provided by a high voltage bias supply controlled by a feedback system utilizing another laser.
