摘要： Unlike most MEMS device configurations which simply switch between two positions in many optical devices the state of a MEMS mirror is important in all transition positions. It may determine the characteristics of an optical delay line system and by that an optical coherence tomography system in one application and in another the number of wavelength channels and the dynamic wavelength switching capabilities in the other. The role of the MEMS is essential and it is responsible for altering the paths of the different wavelengths in either device. It would be beneficial to improve the performance of such MEMS and thereby the performance of the optical components and optical systems they form part of. The inventors have established improvements to the design and implementation of such MEMS mirrors as well as optical waveguide technologies to in-plane optical processing as well as the mid infrared for optical spectroscopy.

摘要： An optically switched network system includes an optical switch with N inputs and N outputs that connects N end-nodes and is structured to transmit N wavelengths from each of the N inputs to each of the N outputs. The system includes a virtual data plane and a virtual control plane, which both communicate through the optical switch. The virtual data plane provides any-to-all parallel connectivity for data transmissions among the N end-nodes. The N end-nodes are partitioned into two or more subsets, wherein end-nodes in a given source subset transmit data to a given destination subset using wavelengths, which are not used by end-nodes outside of the given source subset to transmit data to the same given destination subset. The virtual control plane includes two or more rings associated with the two or more subsets of end-nodes. Each ring passes through a subset of end-nodes, and is used to communicate arbitration information among arbitration logic located at each end-node in the ring.

The optical ADU waveguide includes at least one region providing optical signal coupling between the ADU waveguide and a multi-mode waveguide; and, one or more phase matching regions for controlling a relative or absolute phase difference between an electromagnetic wave (EMW) carried in the ADU waveguide and the multi-mode waveguide. The mode-selective add/drop unit may further include a transition region connecting the coupling region and a phase matching region, wherein a shape of a transition region is governed by a polynomial function, exponential function, logarithmic function, trigonometric function or, any combination of these functions.
