    • Disclosed is a solar concentrating collector comprising an elastic membrane member for concentrating sunlight, a frame for holding the membrane member in plane and in tension, and a tensioning means for varying the tension of the membrane member. The tensioning means is disposed at the frame and is adapted to releasably attach the membrane member thereto. The tensioning means is also adapted to uniformly and symmetrically subject the membrane member to stretching forces such that membrane stresses produced thereby are distributed uniformly over a thickness of the membrane member and reciprocal twisting moments are substantially prevented from acting about said frame.

    • Spherically-shaped dish and cylindrically-shaped trough reflectors are produced by the deflection of a thin reflective element within its elastic range of stress. A spherical or cylindrical shape is produced by including a pure bending moment stress pattern in the reflective element. This is accomplished by clamping the edges of the reflective element to a rigid frame which is precisely dimensioned relative to the dimensions of the reflective element. Preferably, the surface of the frame which engages and supports the reflective element is tangent to the desired radius of curvature of the reflector. Close control of the dimensions insures that no compressive or tensile stresses are induced in the element by forces from the support surfaces, such forces tending to push the edges of the reflective element toward or away from each other.

    • A focusing solar collector which utilizes an elongated parabolic shaped mirror made from a sheet of drapable material so that when draped in a catenary like curved configuration, the sun's rays may be focused on a linear target which is axially aligned with the axis of the mirror. Means are provided for adjusting the angle of the drape of the catenary like curve in order to maintain the focus of the sun's rays on the linear target as the relative diurnal position of the sun to the collector changes. The optimum catenary like curve for the range of the drape angles involved is achieved by using a non-linear distribution of weight along the cross-section of the draped mirror material.

    • A solar collector using air as its heat transfer medium having a top member containing a plurality of transparent sealed air pockets allowing passage of radiant energy but preventing conductive and convective heat losses generated inside the collector; a central black-coated absorbent plastic member divides the center of the collector into a plurality of interconnected inflatable upper and lower chambers connected to air pumps at one end and to a constriction valve outlet at the other. The lower end of the lower chambers consists of a cover containing a multiplicity of insulative sealed air channels. The collector can be mounted on a turntable frame having adjustable reflective panels mounted above and below the collector. The heated air after it has given up its calories to a storage unit is recirculated to the inflatable chambers.

    • Low cost solar collectors are constructed by stretching a thin elongate, flexible reflective sheet (such as metallized polyethylene terephthalate film) over a frame so as to provide a ridged surface of desired geometric shape. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the frame comprises a plurality of rod-like members, with a supply reel on one end and a take-up reel on the other end. Extra reflective sheet material is stored on the supply reel so that when the sheet material in the concentrator degrades (after prolonged exposure to sun light), the degraded material can be rolled onto the take-up reel and fresh sheet material disposed in its place on the frame.
