    • An apparatus and method indirectly determines the amount of outside air introduced into the ventilation system of a structure to control the indoor air quality in the structure. Test gas concentrations, preferably carbon dioxide concentrations, are measured for return air, outside air and mixed (supply) air. The flow rate of mixed air is measured. The volume of outside air introduced into the system is determined through use of the test gas concentration measurements without directly measuring the volume or flow rate of outside air. Preferably, a single sensor is utilized to measure each of the trace gas concentrations in the return air, outside air and supply air, and the various measurements sequentially multiplexed to a controller. Moreover, for calibrating the apparatus, a return air sensor is calibrated to the outside air and a mixed air sensor is calibrated to the outside air or the return air to eliminate inaccuracy due to sensor drift.

    • A complete system for indoor air pollution control and its components is disclosed herein, incorporating a furnace, heat pump or the like for supplying conditioned air to a room or zone via a duct network. Air filters are removably disposed at exhaust vents leading into the room or zone and intake vents are included for drawing air away from the room or zone for re-circulation. Ambient air intake vents are included in the duct network and the network is suitable for multiple level buildings. The system further includes sensing circuits within the duct work or zone which tests or senses the air for multiple characteristics of air quality and a panel having a variety of displays portrays the results of the individual characteristics being monitored. Such characteristics of air quality include ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, etc.

    • An interior atmosphere control system contains a group of sensors to detect/measure indoor and outdoor air temperature, humidity, air pressure, oxygen content, carbon-dioxide content, static electric charge, indoor wall temperature, sound and light. These measured results, through a signal transfer interface, are sent to a microcomputer which also accepts a user's command as input data through a user's interface. The microcomputer, based on a monitor/control program and data prestored in its memory unit, the sensed values, and the user's command, will then execute the necessary calculation, comparison and decision, and output adequate time variant control signals, through an output interface, to actuate a series of actuators to adjust the indoor temperature, humidity, air pressure, oxygen content, carbon-dioxide content, wind speed, static electric charge, magnetic field, sound, odor, and light which will generate different atmospheric modes, for example, to make people feel comfortable, refreshed, awakened, energetic, sleepy, uneasy, or even frightened. Above all, these feelings are promoted on the basis of the natural balance of human body, such as heat release and perspiration, by adjusting, the room temperature, humidity, wind speed and other factors.
