    • A sliding valve including a valve body (1) with a wall having a valve opening (3) and a valve seat (4) surrounding the valve opening (3), a valve plate (5), at least one valve rod (8) that can move in the axial direction and can be moved for closing the valve starting from a first position in which the valve plate (5) assumes its open position, to a second position in which the valve plate (5) assumes an intermediate position covering the valve opening (3) but lifted from the valve seat (4), into a third position in which the valve plate (5) assumes its closed position. At least one lifting element (10, 11) moves the valve plate (5) from its intermediate position into its closed position, and at least one support unit (12) with at least one front and at least one rear support element (14, 13) that interact in the closed position of the valve plate (5) with at least one valve-body-fixed, front support element and at least one valve-body-fixed, rear support element (16, 15). In the second position of the valve rod (8), either the rear support elements (13, 15) or the front support elements (14, 16) are in engagement and the other of these support elements (14, 16; 13, 15) are spaced apart from each other. When moving the valve rod (8) from its second to its third position, the support unit (12) pivots about a rotational axis (17) from a starting position in which the other support elements (14, 16; 13, 15) are spaced apart from each other into an end position in which the other support elements (14, 16; 13, 15) contact each other.

    • A vacuum lock on a vacuum chamber has a lockable gate opening with a substantially vertical gate and the following characteristics: the gate is a sliding plate displaceable parallel to the opening; the gate is connected via a driving rod on a side oppose the opening and is supported at a distance in the sliding direction; this connection is via a guidance mechanism such that in the presence of a blockage of the closing process, the gate is laterally pressed on a seal encompassing the opening; and a spring element is provided to narrowly compensates the weight of the gate. This ensures that in the event of a operator error or unintentional reaching into the opening during a closing process, injuries cannot occur and a high degree of safety is ensured.

    • Presented is a vacuum valve having a metallic housing that may be mounted in a vacuum system in any attitude. The valve includes a "knife" edge seal formed on the interior of the metallic housing on one wall thereof, surrounding a port therein, and adapted to sealingly impinge against a metallic sealing pad mounted within the housing on a carriage that is translatable longitudinally of the housing by manipulation of a spindle that cooperates with a bellows sealing the housing. The spindle extends out to the housing and includes means for suitable manipulation of the spindle. Means are provided within the housing operatively interposed between the carriage and sealing pad to effect lateral translation of the sealing pad in relation to the carriage on which it is mounted to engage and disengage the "knife" edge seal upon appropriate rotation of the spindle. Means are also provided within the housing to prevent seizing of metallic parts that move relative to one another within the vacuum valve.

    • A valve structure permitting two vacuum chambers (16, 20) to be separted or joined without breaking the vacuum in either. The structure includes first and second valves (10, 12) positioned at openings in the vacuum chambers, a valve housing 30 surrounding the valves and able to be sealed to form a valve lock chamber (32), and a pair of valve actuators (34, 36). Each valve includes a pair of plates movable together to an intermediate position over the opening, and then movable away from each other in response to further actuator movement, to seal one of the plates over the opening. In one disclosed embodiment the plates are moved apart by a pair of parallel pivot links, and in another embodiment a pair of balls is used to effect the required sealing movement.

    • Apparatus for controlling fluid flow through a gate opening includes frame means that define the opening, and guide means which are adapted to retain a gate disc in slidable relation with the opening. Drawing means for laterally displacing the disc relative to the opening are pivotably connected to lever means having long and short ends. A fulcrum between the ends is pivotably connected to the disc. The short end is disposed to bear against a fixed portion of the guide means when the disc is closed, and the long end is connected to the drawing means to obtain a mechanical advantage in drawing pressure when displacing the disc to a partially open position. The lever means may be a single lever, but a preferred embodiment discloses a pair of levers to apply a uniform drawing pressure on the disc via a hydraulic cylinder that is anchored in a wall of a closed tank which contains the apparatus. A piston rod of the cylinder faces outwardly of the tank to avoid contamination and subsequent corrosion and is connected to the lever means by rods which are slidably sealed in passages leading through the wall.
