    • A valve assembly including a body defining a passageway having a longitudinal axis, a rotatable shaft extending into the passageway, generally perpendicular to the axis of the passageway, and a flapper secured to the shaft within the passageway and movable upon rotation of the shaft between an opened position and a closed position. The flapper includes a groove in an outer circumference, and a seal is received in the groove. The seal has an outer circumference greater than the outer circumference of the flapper so the entire outer circumference of the seal contacts a wall of the passageway when the flapper is moved to the closed position. The seal also has an inner circumference greater than an inner circumference of the groove of the flapper such that an enclosed space is defined between the seal and the groove. An aperture provides fluid communication between the enclosed space and the passageway.

    • There is disclosed a novel sealing member and arrangement for a valve of the type including a valve body having a fluid passage therethrough and a flow control member movably supported relative to the body for opening and closing the flow passage, such as found in a ball or butterfly type of valve constructions. The valve body and flow control member include, respectively, an annular sealing surface and an annular sealing member support groove or channel confronting the sealing surface and having an annular sealing member disposed therein. The sealing member includes an anchoring portion held between opposed sidewalls of the support groove, and a convoluted portion extending radially inwardly of the anchoring portion, with a sealing portion carried thereby, and designed to extend beyond the groove, for engagement with the sealing surface. The groove sidewalls are of slightly greater axial width than the sealing member to permit limited elastic axial deflection. The convoluted structure also permits a slight elastic radial movement of the sealing member where necessary in order to permit the sealing member to adjust its radial position to achieve proper alignment with the sealing surface. In one embodiment, the convoluted portion, in cross section, is generally of decreasing thickness, in the direction of the sealing surface, thereby simulating a beam of uniform stress. This shape permits axial deflection while encouraging a generally uniform distribution of stress throughout the convoluted portion during axial flexing thereof upon engagement with the sealing surface, substantially preventing detrimental permanent deformation of the sealing member.

    • The device comprises a main valve-seat of sheet metal having an anchoring flange attached to the valve body and a closure structure which is adapted to cooperate with the valve disk by means of an outer wall forming a curled shell, said closure structure being applied against the convex surface of an auxiliary seat which is in turn applied against the valve body in order to ensure resilient coiling-up of the curled shell when closing the valve, thereby reducing the operating torque of the valve and achieving enhanced leak-tightness in the closed position.

    • The valve is of the type having a body and a butterfly valve closure member. One of these parts has an annular sealing element which is retained in a cavity with which it defines an annular chamber. The other part has an annular surface for contacting the sealing element when the valve is closed. A conduit puts the chamber in communication with the upstream side of the closure member when the latter is in its valve closing position. According to the invention, an exhaust conduit is provided for putting the chamber in communication with the downstream side of the closure member when, and only when, the closure member is not in its valve closing position.
