    • A continuously variable transmission (CVT) system for use on snowmobiles, ATV's and similar vehicles. The CVT includes a rotatable drive clutch connected to an input shaft (the input shaft being connectable to an engine), and a roller clutch carried on the input shaft. The CVT also includes a rotatable driven clutch connected to an output shaft, the driven clutch having a laterally stationary sheave and a laterally movable sheave that is normally biased toward the stationary sheave. An endless flexible drive belt is disposed about the drive and driven clutches. The clutches and drive belt are configured so that when the engine is idling the belt firmly engages a drive surface of the roller clutch that is connected to the drive clutch. The roller clutch permits the drive surface (and, therefore, the belt) to remain stationary when the input shaft is rotating, thereby preventing vehicle "creep" when idling, and, yet, the roller clutch also firmly engages the drive clutch's drive surface with the input shaft when the driven clutch attempts to drive the belt faster than the speed at which the drive clutch and input shaft are rotating, thereby permitting the driven clutch to backdrive the input shaft and engine to provide engine braking to the vehicle.

    • Improved safety and operation is obtained in a high-speed variable ratio pulley having a movable pulley flange which is driven rotatively by torque transmitting engagement between fixed spider arms and drive posts adjacent the periphery of the movable pulley flange, and is thrust axially toward a fixed pulley flange by centrifugal cam levers acting between the movable pulley flange and the spider arms. The drive posts closely straddle the thrust line and are long enough to give clearance for the intended flange movement, and their ends are tied together by a tie plate and a ductile bell housing which also engage an outboard bearing to support the posts and movable pulley flange against tilting. Cam movement of the pulley flange is limited, in one case by providing the cam levers with hooked ends which stop their swing at a point short of thrusting the movable pulley flange into forceful abutment with the fixed pulley flange, and in another case by positioning the tie plate to move as a stop against the ends of the spider, substantially on the cam thrust line. For special applications, the spider is adjustably positioned to provide different cam locations and engaging speeds.

    • A controller for a continuously variable transmission includes an electronic control unit. The electronic control unit reduces a change in a target speed ratio of the continuously variable transmission when a sensitivity coefficient is large as compared to when the sensitivity coefficient is small. When the sensitivity coefficient is large, a change in speed ratio is suppressed, so the stability of the speed ratio is improved. When the sensitivity coefficient is small, the response of a shift is improved. The controller changes a degree of suppressing a shift of the continuously variable transmission in response to the sensitivity coefficient, so it is possible to suppress a shift where necessary. Thus, it is possible to achieve both improvement in the stability of the speed ratio and improvement in the response of a shift in automatic vehicle speed control. This suppresses a feeling of strangeness experienced by a driver.

    • A torque transmission system has driving and driven pulley units drivingly connected by an endless V-belt. Each of the driving and driven pulley units includes a stationary pulley rotatable with a shaft and a movable pulley disposed to define with the stationary pulley a circumferential continuous groove for receiving the V-belt. The movable pulleys of the driving and driven pulley units are axially resiliently biased so that the radii of the circles along which the V-belt engages the driving and driven pulley units are varied to change the speed-change ratio of the transmission system. The movable pulley of the driven pulley unit is axially shifted by fly weights. The driving and driven pulley units are provided with cam mechanisms each comprising a cam member and a follower member. When the load on the driven pulley unit is suddenly varied, the cam mechanisms are operative to keep constant the rotational speed of the driven pulley unit irrespective of variations in the load on the driven pulley unit.
