    • A transmission apparatus includes an interlock member having a restraining portion movable together with a shift and select member in a right-angled direction and, while fork heads are at neutral positions in the right-angled direction, extending in the right-angled direction along a notch of the tip end of each fork head. The restraining portion has a gap into which the tip end of each fork head extends. A dimensional relationship among an outer span of the tip end of each fork head, an inner span of the notch, an outer span of the restraining portion, an inner span of the restraining portion, a width of the tip end of the shift and select member, and a shift stroke of each fork head is set to be: H2−P1≧0; P2−H1+2S≧0; and H2−2S−I≧0.

    • An apparatus for selection and engagement of selectable gear ratios in a change speed transmission is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a shaft mounted in a housing, a plurality of shift forks, and a shift plate. Each of the shift forks is axially movable along the shaft. Each of the shift forks also has a projection extending therefrom. The shift plate has a plurality of first patterns therethrough. Each first pattern includes axial and transverse pathways arranged to receive a corresponding projection such that when one of the projections is not aligned in an axial pathway of one of the first patterns in response to lateral movement of a shifting actuator, the other projections are aligned in axial pathways similarly located in the other first patterns. Subsequent axial movement of the shifting actuator imparts movement to only one shift fork to engage the desired gear.

    • By making the ratios of the gear pairs in a conventional single countershaft transmissions a particularly defined sequence, and mounting the gear elements that are not affixed to the countershaft so that, that of the first gear pair is free to rotate on and couplable to the input shaft, that of the second gear pair is free to rotate on the output shaft and couplable to both the input and output shafts, with those of the remaining pairs free to rotate on and couplable to the output shaft, the number of ratios in the transmission will be enhanced by a factor of two (2) and the continuum will be in a particular geometric progression. By extending the particularly defined ratio sequence to a series arrangement of similarly constructed gearboxes, the number of continuum ratios in the resulting transmission will be enhanced by a factor of three (3) to five (5) and the continuum will again be of the same geometric progression.

    • A manual shift transmission having multiple input and output portions is provided with a control having input and output shift rails. A laterally movable control shaft extends axially through cutouts in respective shift rails and carries cams adapted to cooperate with cam follower surfaces on corresponding cutouts to effect rectilinear movement of the shift rails upon rotation of the control shaft. The cams are arranged on the shaft so that the shaft may be positioned to place respective cams in register with the input and output shift rails while all other cams are out of register with the rail cutouts. The shift movement of respective output and input shift rails is overlapped during the rotation of the control shaft to decrease the throw of the shift lever.
