A frictional resistance generating mechanism 7 generates a frictional resistance while each spring is being compressed. Owing to a rotating-direction space 79, the frictional resistance generating mechanism 7 does not operate in the second stage of the torsion characteristics and also does not in the first stage while a torsion angle is in a predetermined range.

    • Apparatus for damping torsional vibrations in the power train of a motor vehicle has two coaxial flywheels one of which is driven by the engine and the other of which can transmit torque to the input shaft of a transmission by way of a friction clutch. The flywheels are rotatable relative to each other against the resistance of a damper. Certain features of the apparatus reside in the dimensioning and distribution of its parts in the radial and axial directions of the flywheels to reduce the dimensions of the apparatus. The torque transmitting connection between at least one pair of neighboring rotary parts of the apparatus employs a slip clutch which yields when the applied torque exceeds a certain value. An intermittently or continuously active hysteresis device is utilized to operate in parallel with the energy storing springs of the damper.

    • A centrifugal mass device having at least two centrifugal masses which are rotatable relative to each other against the effect of elastic elements of a torsional damping device. The output-side centrifugal mass, which is more distant from a drive, e.g., the crankshaft of an internal combustion engine, is run radially as well as axially relative to the drive-side centrifugal mass via a support. The support has an axial slide bearing that borders a grease chamber containing a viscous medium, which grease chamber accommodates, at least partially, the torsional damping device. To form a seal for the grease chamber, the axial slide bearing is radially encompassed along at least a portion of its axial extension by at least one axial projection provided on at least one of the centrifugal masses, whereby the axial projection is close to but separated by a gap from an associated region of the other centrifugal mass.

    • A torsional vibration damper has two mutually pivoted masses and a friction device that is active between the masses. This friction device can include a first friction device that is a spring friction device and an auxiliary friction device comprising at least one entraining wedge. The entraining wedge can function as a dual wedge having at least two frictional surfaces for contacting at least one of the two mutually pivoted masses. There can also be at least one additional entraining wedge disposed parallel to the at least one entraining wedge inside of a chamber formed between the two mutually pivoted masses. The friction device and the auxiliary friction device frictionally couple the two mutually pivoted masses together.

A release device 10 releases the bias toward the frictional connection portion 54 by applying a load to the clutch cover assembly 8 in an axial direction toward the engine. A support plate 39 elastically supports the second flywheel assembly 5 such that the second flywheel assembly 5 can move in a bending direction. A bending direction movement suppression mechanism 24 suppresses bending movement of the second flywheel 5 by connecting the second flywheel assembly 5 to a disk-like member 13 when the clutch cover assembly 8 receives a load toward the engine in the axial direction.
