    • A modular workbench assembly is presented that provides the user with an infinite number of potential workbench configurations with varying quantities of lower shelf sets, drawer sets, and upper shelf sets. This invention allows economical continual workbench lengthwise expansion by featuring a unique leg assembly and a unique upper shelf assembly that permit a specified number of dimensional lumber pieces to span and fasten to its top surface, or allows the fastening of twice as many dimensional lumber pieces forming a butt joint at the central vertical axis of both the leg assembly and the upper shelf assembly. The leg vertical member of U-shaped cross section features a pair of outward and opposite lengthwise protruding flanges and features a pair of adjacent lateral mounting surfaces so that lateral members, lengthwise members and upward members can be installed simultaneously using a unique, common interlocking fastening scheme which prevents the members from becoming loose under a vibration environment. A unique upper shelf assembly is presented that snaps into place on a leg assembly and is fully adjustable. The upper shelf assembly permits installation of additional structural members onto the leg assembly without removal of the upper shelf assembly from the leg assembly. A universal drawer rail assembly is presented that enables quick and sturdy assembly that is fully interchangeable as either a left drawer rail or a right drawer rail.

    • A section-joining joint system for joining rigid sections in disassembable relation, enabling the provision of knock-down assemblies, such as frames, stands and the like, has a series of joints, each requiring the piercing of one of the joint members to form a projecting anchorage flap, and the application of a single tension member secured by the anchorage flap, the tension member being in the form of a bolt and nut in securing relation between the abutting joint members. Joints having as many as four members may be thus formed, which can include diagonal brace members. Carriage bolts having radius-profiled heads with squared inner head portions may be used as the bolting medium. The piercing operation can provide a perforated, projecting flap located adjacent the end of the member, and positioned to receive the tensioned (bolt) member in entered relation therethrough, the free end of the tensioned (bolt) member being passed through apertures in the adjoined structural members, enabling a nut to be applied to the bolt and tightened against the inner face of the projecting flap, drawing the joint members together in mutual compressive relation to complete the assembly of the joint. The joint members may be of U-section channel; also L-section members, and combinations thereof can be used. By the use of asymetrical joints, the structure can be rigidified, providing lateral and longitudinal stiffness. Two types of flap formation can be used, and a support can be introduced to limit flap deflection.

    • A novel method and apparatus is disclosed for the production of single plane ladder-type rack strip material in which wire cross bar elements are Tee-welded to the inside surface portions of opposed, parallel side elements formed of similar wire material. The welding procedure involves contacting the cross bar element centrally with an electrode of a first polarity and contacting the wire side elements on opposite sides with electrodes of a second polarity. During the welding operation, current flows substantially equally from the first electrode in opposite directions through the opposite weld interfaces to the opposed second electrodes. By observing physical symmetry in the electrical supply at opposite sides, equalization of current flow is optimized so that the emerging rack strip product is flat and straight, suitable for commercial marketing. By forming the rack strip elements in a single plane, the elements can be formed into a wide variety of modular components for the assembly of a variety of useful rack and shelving structures. Novel forms of mounting and connecting blocks are also disclosed.

    • The invention relates to the construction of metal articles such as work benches, pallet racks, etc., by way of example. In a typical construction upright hollow metal legs are secured to a flat table or platform surface. The upright members or legs preferably may be square in cross section. The upper ends of the legs are secured to mutually perpendicular transverse members which in turn are secured to the flat platform surface. The transverse members are preferably channel shaped with side flanges. An end plug or fitting is inserted into the upper end of each leg, the fitting being tapped to receive stud bolts. The ends of the transverse members are secured to the legs and the end plugs by stud bolts.
