    • The present invention relates to a method for monitoring an ignition system, wherein the ignition system comprises a charge coil (L1) for charging the ignition system, a primary coil (L4) and a secondary coil (L5), said primary and secondary coils (L4, L5) being arranged to generate a voltage for spark generation, and a control unit (M1), characterized in the steps a) providing a separate coil (L3) adjacent to at least one of the charge coil (L1), the primary coil (L4) and the secondary coil (L5) b) using the control unit (M1) to monitor a magnetic flux at the separate coil (L3), and c) using information regarding said magnetic flux as input for controlling at least one property of an operation of the ignition system. The invention also relates to a control system for an ignition system.

    • Disclosed is a multiple test system for use in vehicles for inspecting the operation of an ignition system, more particularly, which upon application of a high voltage to an ignition plug, outputs the waveform of the high voltage from the ignition plug by detecting the same with a Hall sensor so that the high voltage can be compared with a reference voltage having a predetermined high voltage waveform in order to inspect whether the ignition system operates normally. The test system of the invention is connected to a cable of the ignition plug via the Hall sensor, and sets a reference voltage with respect to the high voltage waveform to compare the high voltage waveform from the ignition plug with the reference value in order to calculate maximum, minimum and mean values of the voltage waveform. Ignition energy is inspected based upon output results so that a user can readily judge whether to replace a component or not. The test system of the invention can also inspect engine RPM, the voltage/current of an electric generator, the compression pressure of a cylinder and resistance as well as ignition energy.

    • To prevent transfer of stray pulses from the ignition system to test apparatus, a pulse-shaping circuit is connected between the output of the ignition system and the test apparatus itself which includes a semiconductor switch providing an output signal to the test apparatus upon change of state thereof, and a charge storage circuit connected to the coupling element of the test system to the ignition system and to the semiconductor switch, the charge storage circuit having a short loading time and a re-loading or discharge time which is long with respect to the loading time thereof to rapidly transfer pulses to the switch and cause rapid change of state thereof while slowly unloading the charge and prevent further change of state of the switch during the unloading time, and thus suppress and eliminate stray pulses.

    • A system for indicating engine speed without physically contacting the engine, including a tachometer comprising an inductive loop which may be buried in the ground and connected to an electrical amplifying system which picks up very low frequency radio frequency (RF) pulses from the ignition system of an automobile or other vehicle whose engine is located above the loop. The tachometer includes controls for selecting the number of engine cylinders corresponding to the vehicle being tested and a meter readout providing a visible or other suitable indication of the vehicle's engine speed. Undesirable background noises are substantially eliminated by the pickup loop design and its orientation, input signal filtering, power line filtering, base line signal rejection and automatic gain control.
