    • A two-stroke internal combustion engine (30) is disclosed. Fuel efficiency is improved and extended over a wide power band by an inlet air valve (108) which controls the air charge and maintains a constant compression ratio. An integrated positive displacement supercharger (50) provides adequate air charge at all power levels and recovers compressor power from unused supercharged air. An integrated post combustion chamber (48) extends the power stroke by mixing combustion gases with ambient air for farther expansion and power production. Exhaust noise is reduced because the combustion gases are vented from the engine at lower pressure, lower velocity and temperature. The opposed cylinder design provides nearly continuous power by combining supercharger power recovery with extended power strokes.

    • The double action piston assembly is for an internal combustion engine and has a combustion chamber that has a double action piston connected to one end of a central power rod disposed within the combustion chamber. A first intake air port and a first exhaust port are located in the up side of the combustion chamber. A compression chamber is connected to the combustion chamber. A central power rod passes through the combustion chamber into the compression chamber and out the compression chamber. A fuel mixture is fed into the combustion chamber and ignition means adjacent to combustion chamber to ignite the fuel mixture. At the end of each stroke, the compression exhaust valves are opened and the intake ports and the exhaust ports are open to permit air from the compression chamber to pass through the conduits into the combustion chamber for full scavenging of the combustion chamber.

    • An internal combustion engine includes a piston dividing a cylinder into first and second variable volume chambers on either side thereof. One chamber admits and compresses air which is delivered to another chamber for combustion. The other chamber admits combustion gasses, causing the piston to translate in the cylinder. In one embodiment, combustion of fuel occurs in a combustion chamber separate from the first and second variable volume chambers. In one embodiment, the translation of the piston effects movement of a connecting rod connected to an output shaft. In another embodiment, the piston is mounted on an output shaft and translation of the piston causes the piston to rotate, thus effecting rotation of the output shaft.

    • A reduced volume scavenging system for a two cycle engine embodying a duplex cylinder having an upper cylinder bore and a reduced-diameter lower cylinder bore. The lower bore communicates with a crankcase that houses a crankshaft, connecting rod(s) and engine lubricating oil. A fixed sleeve lines the upper cylinder bore and extends up into the cylinder head. A piston disposed for reciprocating motion within the fixed sleeve has an attached cylindrical, reciprocating sleeve that extends down into the lower cylinder bore and moves with the piston. The reciprocating sleeve has compression rings that seal the lower bore and the crankcase against blowyby gases that might contaminate the oil. The fixed sleeve has an intake opening in registry with an inlet port in the upper cylinder bore for admission of fresh air-fuel mixture. The fixed sleeve also has an exhaust opening diametrically opposite the intake opening and in registry with an exhaust port in the upper cylinder bore, as well as upper and lower pairs of scavenging openings in registry with transfer passageways recessed into the upper cylinder bore, such that each out stroke of the piston forces fresh air-fuel mixture through the passageways and into the combustion chamber to flush out burnt gases. This arrangement permits use of four cycle engine lubricating methods and apparatus in two cycle engines, without unduly adding to their weight and complexity, thereby reducing the emission of air pollutants and increasing engine life.

    • An improved two-cycle internal combustion engine with a novel intake, exhaust and piston arrangement in which a fresh charge for combustion component is advantageously transferred through the piston and all valves in the engine operate in response to changes in dynamic pressure generated within the engine. The piston includes at least one charging passage through its top surface with a pressure sensitive valve affixed to the top surface of the piston for preventing flow of a fresh charge through the charging passage in the absence of a greater pressure differential caused by the intake charge against the undersurface of the pressure sensitive valve. Advantageously, the pressure sensitive valve is deflected upwardly to provide passage of a charge through the charging passage in the presence of a sufficient pressure differential caused by the intake charge acting against the undersurface of the pressure sensitive valve, and the charging passage and pressure sensitive valve coact to direct flow of the incoming charge toward the walls of the engine cylinder away from the exhaust. Also advantageously, the intake and exhaust can be directly controlled by the piston.
