    • A dual throttle valve control for an internal combustion engine of the type having a main combustion chamber supplied with a lean mixture and an auxiliary combustion chamber supplied with a rich mixture. A spark plug ignites the rich mixture in the auxiliary chamber and the resulting blast of flame passes through a torch nozzle to ignite the lean mixture in the main chamber. Two carburetor throttle valves are interconnected for dependent action through a dashpot, cam and cam follower comprising the dual control to regulate the relative amounts of air-fuel mixture admitted to each chamber as the engine load varies from idling to full throttle. Slow opening of the main throttle valve causes corresponding movement of the auxiliary valve, while abrupt opening of the main throttle valve causes the auxiliary throttle valve to open widely and then assume the opening determined by the cam and cam follower.

    • An internal combustion engine includes a pre-chamber. In another aspect, pressure within a pre-chamber is equal to or greater than pressure within a main combustion chamber at least prior to ignition in the main combustion chamber. A further aspect provides a supplemental piston creating pressure and supplying a fuel-air mixture into a pre-chamber, and a spark or glow plug has an end located within the pre-chamber for ignition of the mixture therein. In yet another aspect, internal combustion engine control software automatically controls pressure within a turbulent jet ignition pre-chamber, controls a valve-actuator to admit a fuel-air charge into the pre-chamber, and causes an ignitor to initiate combustion in the pressurized pre-chamber. This also permits the rate of combustion to be controlled in the primary chamber regardless of the air-fuel ratio or the diluent fraction in the main chamber. Another aspect employs a pre-chamber purge pump with separate air and fuel injection. Moreover, an additional aspect separately supplies unmixed air and fuel into a turbulent jet ignition pre-chamber through a dual-mode, single injector unit.

    • A carburetor for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine which has for each cylinder a main combustion chamber defined above the piston in the cylinder and a sub-combustion chamber defined above the main combustion chamber and communicating with the latter through a torch nozzle. The carburetor has a main intake passage and a sub-intake passage for supplying a comparatively lean mixture and a comparatively rich mixture to the main and sub-combustion chambers respectively. The carburetor has a single throttle valve shaft extending across the main and sub-intake passages with a main throttle valve and a sub-throttle valve mounted on the valve shaft and disposed in the main and sub-intake passages respectively.The main and sub-throttle valves are attached to the single throttle valve shaft at the same attaching angle and have respective parallel surfaces and outer peripheral edge surface. The angle formed between the outer peripheral edge surface and the parallel surfaces of the main throttle valve and the angle formed between the outer peripheral edge surface and the parallel surfaces of the sub-throttle valve are different from one another so that the ratio of the open areas of the main and sub-intake passages is not constant as the throttle shaft is operated. Thereby, the ratio of weight of air introduced into the sub-combustion chamber to the weight of air introduced into the main combustion chamber can be controlled in accordance with the load condition of the engine.

    • A stratified charge emission control system for an internal combustion engine comprises a fuel and air metering unit mounted on a precombustion chamber which in turn is mounted in a spark plug hole of the cylinder head of the engine. The spark plug is mounted on the outer end of the precombustion chamber and the unit is provided with a mixing passage which is connected to a fuel source and a source of air. The unit provides the rich portion of the charge to the cylinder and the lean portion of the charge is introduced thereto from the carburetor. The unit also can be used in conjunction with a fuel injection engine.
