    • The present invention relates to an exhaust pipe, which prevents a reducing agent from penetrating a support member for an exhaust purification catalyst, and effectively prevents the exhaust purification catalyst from being damaged due to the expansion of the support member. An exhaust gas purification catalyst 30 for reducing and purifying nitrogenous compounds contained in exhaust gas discharged from an internal combustion engine, using a reducing agent, is provided on the inside of the exhaust pipe 10 via support member 20. A baffle portion 15 for preventing the reducing agent from penetrating the exhaust gas purification catalyst 30 is provided on the portion of the internal surface of the exhaust pipe 10, which is upstream side of the exhaust gas purification catalyst 30.

    • The present disclosure relates to a method for making an exhaust treatment device having a substrate (22) positioned within a casing (24). The casing includes a primary wall (26) that surrounds the substrate (22) and end flanges (28) that extend inwardly from the primary wall (26). The end flanges (28) oppose ends of the substrate and assist in retaining the substrate within the casing. The method includes providing the casing (24) with the flanges (28). The method also includes positioning the substrate within the casing after casing has been provided with the flanges. A device having a bead structure (43) positioned between a casing (24) and an exhaust structure (27) is also disclosed.

    • A catalytic converter for purifying exhaust gas discharged from an automotive internal combustion engine. The catalytic converter comprises a casing in which a monolithic catalyst carrier is disposed. An annular cap is fixedly disposed inside the casing and located generally coaxial with the monolithic catalyst carrier. The annular cap is located near an end face of the monolithic catalyst carrier. The cap includes annular bottom, inner and outer walls. The inner and outer walls are separate from each other and extend from the bottom wall. The inner wall is located radially inward of the outer wall. The bottom, inner and outer walls are arranged generally U-shaped in cross-section so as to form a groove. Additionally, an annular elastic washer is coaxially disposed within the groove of the annular cap. The elastic washer is disposed in press contact with the end face of the monolithic catalyst carrier to axially elastically support the monolithic catalyst carrier. The annular elastic washer is an annular molded structure of wire mesh. The annular elastic washer has an inner peripheral face which has a diameter larger than a diameter of an outer peripheral surface of the inner wall of the cap so as to form a clearance between the elastic washer and the inner wall of the cap in a state where the elastic washer is assembled in the casing upon being compressed.

    • The invention provides apparatus for treating a gas stream, notably a silencer assembly for use to treat the exhaust gasses from an internal combustion engine, which apparatus comprises a plurality of compartments within which one or more treatments are to be performed on a gas stream passing through the compartment, and through which the gas stream is to flow sequentially, characterised in that: a) at least two of said compartments each comprises a tubular body member (1) containing or carrying a treatment element (2) which is restrained against axial movement relative to the body member (1); and b) the tubular body members (1) of the adjacent compartments are provided with radially outwardly and/or inwardly extending terminal flanges (4), at least some of which flanges (4) provide a shoulder against which the opposing terminal portion of the adjacent compartment bears so as to form an axially extending structure comprising at least two compartments in axial or coaxial relationship to one another; and c) one or more clamping members (21) which extend axially over substantially the length of the said structure and act upon the axial structure to secure the two adjacent compartments together in gas-tight engagement by an axial clamping action.
