    • A combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine has primary intake ports located a first distance from the crankshaft and primary intake ports located a second distance from the crankshaft. One or more unidirectional valves, such as reed valves, are place in an intake duct upstream of the primary intake ports. The valves prevent backflow from the cylinder into the intake when the pressure in the cylinder exceeds that of the intake. The backflow into the intake is reduced by having valves in the intake; therefore scavenging efficiency is improved. Furthermore, the asymmetry between the intake and exhaust port timing may be reduced by providing such valves. Additionally, the total intake port area can be increased with two sets of intake ports and valves disposed in the primary ports, thereby improving the volumetric efficiency in spite of the pressure drop presented by the valves.

    • Reciprocating drive means powered by a fluid such as compressed air comprising an elongate inner member with a plurality of passageways therein, an outer member slidable on the inner member and a shuttle member slidable with respect to the inner member and within the outer member, the passageways in the inner member being variously and intermittently so connected in use to each other by way of ports in the inner member and compartments provided within the outer member and the shuttle that, upon connection of a determined one of said passageways to a fluid pressure source the outer member moves with reciprocating action with respect to the inner member. The inner member has two fixed discs thereon, between which discs the shuttle member can oscillate, the discs having seals on their peripheral surfaces to seal against the inner wall of the outer member, the outer member is cylindrical with end walls having seals slidable on the inner member and cooperating with ports therein and the shuttle member has axially spaced seals on its inner peripheral surface to cooperate with ports in the inner member and to seal against the inner member and define one of the compartments therebetween. Following movement of the outer member in one direction of movement, the shuttle member is moved by pressure in an opposite direction to cause the outer member to move in said opposite direction.

    • A fluid pressure actuator having a first member, a second member adapted to rotate relative to the first member, and a third member adapted to move on the second member. One of the first member and the second member is formed thereon with two flanges disposed in spaced-apart relationship for closing opposite ends of a first pressure chamber defined between the first and second members. The flanges are each formed in the outer periphery thereof with a groove communicating with passages formed in the first and second members for supplying therethrough power for moving the third member. The actuator is small in volume, dispenses with piping located outside the actuator, and is easy to provide a fluid seal thereto.

    • A piston and cylinder for two-cycle engines wherein the fuel-air mixture is precompressed in the crankcase and flows to the combustion chamber through transfer passages formed in the cylinder wall and under the control of the piston movement. The piston skirt is formed with windows or openings adjacent the end faces of the piston pin, the latter being mounted in piston pin bosses carried by bearing brackets depending from the piston head and, when the piston is at its lower dead center, the windows or openings register with the inlet openings of the transfer passages so that the precompressed fuel-air mixture then flows through the interior of the piston, the openings in the piston skirt and the transfer passages and into the combustion chamber itself which contains a depression volume. The windows or openings in the piston skirt have approximately the same size as the inlet openings of the transfer passages which register with the windows when the piston is at its lower dead center and the piston pin bosses have an aerodynamically favorable shape and are joined to the lower frame portions defining the windows and spaced apart as closely as possible whereas the depression volume of the combustion chamber is accommodated to a substantial extent in the piston head.
