    • A self-advancing, hydraulically powered mine roof support comprises a base means, a double-acting hydraulic advancing ram extending in the intended direction of advance of the support in use, the cylinder of the advancing ram being located towards the forward end of the support and the piston rod of the advancing ram being located towards the rearward end of the support, a lifting ram mounted on the support at or towards the forward end thereof and being operable on the periphery of the cylinder to lift the forward end with respect to the cylinder, the end of the cylinder remote from the piston rod being connectable to a pan of an armoured conveyor, and the advancing ram being connected to the support by an inclined link means pivotally attached to the base means and to the piston rod.

    • A pit prop has a floor-engaging foot, at least one arm pivoted at the rear of this foot and extending forwardly, a roof-engaging shield carried at the front end of this arm, and at least one ram extending vertically between the arm and the foot for pressing the shield against the roof and the foot against the floor. A hydraulic ram has its rear end pivoted at the rear end of the foot and its front end pivoted on the rear end of a rigid link whose front end in turn is pivoted on the face conveyor. The rear end of this link is slidable in and pivoted on the foot. A second link has its front end pivoted on the rear end of the main link and its rear end bearing vertically down against the foot but slidable therealong. A short lifting ram has its rear end pivoted on the rear end of the second link and its front end pivoted on the rear end of the main link above the pivot for the other displacement ram pivoted on this link. Thus expansion of this lifting ram raises the front end of the foot of the pit prop off the floor.

    • A mineral mining installation comprises a longwall structure, such as a conveyor or a winning installation, and a roof support assembly constituted by a plurality of roof support units positioned side-by-side. At least some of the roof support units are provided with hydraulic bracing rams for bracing the longwall structure longitudinally. Each bracing ram is pivotally connected between the longwall structure and the floor sill of a respective roof support unit. Each ram is connected to its floor sill by connection means constituted by a bracket slidably mounted on that floor sill for movement towards, and away from, the longwall structure. Means are provided for securing each of the brackets to its floor sill in any one of a plurality of positions.

    • A mining installation comprises an armoured conveyor made up of a plurality of pans articulated together end-to-end, a plurality of hydraulically powered, self-advancing mine roof supports located side by side along the goaf side of the conveyor, each roof support being connected to a pan by one or more double-acting advancing rams, and each having a base means incorporating a pair of spaced, elongate base members seating on a mine fooor, each support further having a forward end intended to be located, in use, adjacent the goaf side of the conveyor and a rearward end intended to be remote from the conveyor, a rail located between the base members and attached at a forward end thereof to a pan of the conveyor, and a lifting jack carried by the base members at or near the front end thereof and operable on the rail to lift the front ends of the base members from the mine floor and in this condition be advanced towards the conveyor by operation of the one or more double-acting advancing rams.
