    • The mobile stope support apparatus comprises a number of individual units (10) which are interconnected by hydraulic cylinders (12). Each of the units (10) has a series of upright, double-acting legs (20). The legs (20) have independent bases of rounded shape and they are pivoted to an overhead canopy (22) which can be raised and lowered by appropriate actuation of the legs. Each unit also has a fore-and-aft hydraulic cylinder (34) which is connected to a common rail (37), the cylinder (34) being pivotable, by the action of a cylinder (36) in an upright plane to raise and lower the rail. By appropriate sequential operation of the various cylinders, the units can be advanced in turn to advance the whole apparatus. In addition, by appropriate operation of the cylinder (36), the front legs (20) can be lifted off the footwall to facilitate movement of the unit over a rough or uneven footwall.

    • A bi-directional shearing machine mines a longwall face at the bottom of a thick mineral seam in a retreat operation under the protection of a row of adjacent powered roof supports each of which extends in a direction transverse to the solid face. Progressive advance of these roof supports allows the overlying mineral strata to cave. Each roof support is separated into articulated forward and aft units provided with separate sets of hydraulic props and having their solid canopies interfitted in end-to-end relation. The bases of the two units are interconnected with a push-pull hydraulic ram which enables relative longitudinal movement between the two units so that they may be advanced independently along a common axis toward the solid longwall face as the work progresses. During the advance of the forward units to provide face support, plowing and loading of caved mineral on the gob side may proceed without interruption. To accelerate caving, the aft units are independently advanced with an attached gob side chain conveyor and gob plow retracted beneath their canopies for protection. Starting from this retracted position, the gob conveyor and gob plow are allowed to load gradually out into the flushed coal.

    • The invention relates to a mine roof support assembly for use in winning mineral material from a mineral mining working having a mineral face. The assembly comprises three roof support units positioned side-by-side along the face, and a goaf shield common to the three units. Each of the roof support units has a roof shield supported on a floor sill. The goaf shield is adjustable in height so as to extend from the floor to the roof of the working. Advance means are provided for advancing the roof support units towards the face, and further advance means are provided for advancing the goaf shield to follow up the advance of the roof support units. The further advance means acts between the goaf shield and the roof support units, and is such as to advance the goaf shield by a distance greater than the distance through which the advance means advances the roof support units.
