    • The mine prop prestressing device (10) has a tube (12), a cup-shaped member (14) inside the tube which has a base (18) and a cylindrical side wall (20) fixed internally to the wall of the tube. A counter-member is also fixed to the tube in opposition to the cup-shaped member, and a valved inlet leads through the wall of the tube for the purpose of introducing a pressurised fluid into the tube between the base of the cup-shaped member and the counter-member. If the fluid is under sufficiently high pressure, the base of the cup-shaped member and the counter member are deformed apart from one another. The counter-member is typically in the form of an identical or similar cup-shaped member (14). The device (10) is a component part of a mine prop which includes a plunger (36, 38) inserted slidably into the tube so as to locate in a cup-shaped member. When pressurised fluid is introduced into the tube, the plunger is driven telescopically out of the tube.

    • A yield valve comprises a valve body, a first inlet port, an outlet port, a valve seat, and a valve member movable between a first position in which it cooperates with the valve seat to prevent fluid communication between the inlet port and the outlet port and a second position in which the outlet port is brought into fluid communication with the inlet port. One side of the valve member is subjected to the pressure of fluid at the inlet port to urge the valve member towards its second position. Spring means acts on the other side of the valve member to urge the valve member towards its first position. The valve also has a valve chamber isolated from the inlet port and from the outlet port and a second inlet port for supplying a fluid under pressure to the chamber. The valve chamber is so arranged with respect to the valve member and the spring means that fluid pressure within the chamber will act on the valve member to urge the valve member towards its first position and will act on the spring means so as to reduce the force applied to the valve member by the spring means by an amount at least substantially equal to the force applied by the fluid pressure to the valve member.

    • An hydraulically-controlled non-return valve for the hydraulic cylinders of a walking mine-roof support is provided with a cylindrical valve-closing member which is spring-loaded in the closing direction and is guided in a valve case in a valve housing, the valve-closing member being sealed off therein by means of a seal. A space on one face of the valve-closing member is connected to a circulating duct by way of a stepped bore in the valve case, which bore contains a spring-loaded throttle member having through-flow bores of which one has a throttle-like reduced cross-section. During setting of the hydraulic cylinder pressurized fluid flows past the opened valve-closing member through inclined bores and, by way of the circulating duct, to the stroke space of the hydraulic cylinder. During retraction of the hydraulic cylinder, a control piston in the non-return valve is loaded at the same time as an annular space in the hydraulic cylinder. The control piston thus lifts the valve-closing member from a valve seat so that the pressurized fluid flows back in the reverse direction. The said space bounding the valve-closing member is connected to the throttle member in such a manner that the valve-closing member is not caused to oscillate by the pressurized fluid flowing back during retraction of the hydraulic cylinder.

    • A control arrangement for a mine roof support prop which arrangement has a setting valve which can connect the working chamber of the prop to a pressure fluid source to extend the prop or to a storage vessel to retract the prop. A further valve device incorporates a slide valve which is automatically moved against the force of a spring when the prop is set and the pressure in the working chamber reaches the pressure of the source to connect a further pressure fluid source to the working chamber. The further source supplies fluid at a higher pressure than the first source and the valve device has a further spring-loaded slide valve which opens to effect closure of the first slide valve when the pressure in the working chamber reaches the pressure of the further source.
