    • An elongated water ballasted oil spill containment boom made of flexible, compact, and easily storable material and having an inner and an outer chambers. When inflated with water the inner chamber assumes a substantially circular cross section and is cylindrical in shape. The selection of the ratio of the size of the outer and inner chambers controls the degree to which the boom floats above the water level and is submerged below the water level. The portions of the boom above and below the water level prevent, respectively, splashover of oil and the escape of oil under the boom. The boom is statically stable in that a strong righting moment tends to automatically properly reorient the boom in the event of undesirable wave, current or wind forces.

    • The invention relates to an oil confining enclosure for an offshore oil well to provide a barrier against the escape of oil leaking from the drilling operation and includes a floating, generally circular, confining wall encircling an offshore well site and which is supported on a series of interconnected pontoons having operative connection with a floating platform, exteriorly of the confining wall, providing control valves for the connections to the pontoons whereby a vessel may approach the floating platform and by means of the valved connections to the pontoons cause the pontoons to be filled with sea water to sink the confining wall below the level of the sea for access by the vessel to the drilling rig and on the way out again connect with the floating platform valves to blow the water out of the pontoons for the flotation of the circular confining wall.

    • A rapidly deployable breakwater is disclosed having a primary barrier containing liquid under pressure, and one or more overtopping barriers. The primary barrier floats at, and extends substantially below, the surface of the water, while the overtopping barriers are positioned on the primary barrier and extend substantially above the surface of the water, the combination being adapted to attenuate wave action in open water. The liquid in the primary barrier is pressurized to a level substantially greater than the pressure of the surrounding water, and such pressure may be maintained or varied during the period of deployment of the breakwater.

    • Apparatus for confining material floating on water, comprising a floating barrier having upper and lower pivotally connected sections. The upper section is buoyant and thus seeks the water surface, and the lower section is of neutral buoyancy so as to provide ballast and to remain below the surface of the water. A restraint strap is connected to the upper and lower sections to limit the relative movement therebetween. In operation, when there is an upward movement of the water surface, the upper section pivots upwardly to seek the water surface and the lower section remains below the water surface, thereby preventing the floating material from moving over or under the barrier. The restraint strap limits the movement of the upper section from a substantially horizontal position adjacent the lower section to a substantially vertical position when subjected to wave motion.
