    • A system and method for monitoring and adjusting a constant flow asphalt manufacturing process includes monitoring the ratios of recycled material to virgin material to minimize costs and adjusting the mixture in real time. Pulverized asphalt shingle (PAS) material may be used as a source of recycled asphalt oil and fed to a mixing drum with real-time monitoring while making real-time adjustments to supplement the asphalt with new asphalt oil to the mixer. The systems and methods may also be used for monitoring, metering, and supplementing recycled aggregate from recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) with new aggregate. The systems and methods may use one or more processors or programmable logic controllers (PLC) to meter the addition of new materials.

    • Asphalt mix product is produced for delivery at a desired temperature and is comprised of a mixture of recycled asphalt product and virgin material in a specified, selected proportion of recycled asphalt product to virgin material. Recycled asphalt product is heated in an indirectly heated recycled asphalt product heater to an elevated temperature. Virgin material is heated in a heater to a maximum temperature not exceeding a prescribed temperature above which damage to that heater will occur. The heated recycled asphalt product is mixed with the heated virgin material in the selected proportion of recycled asphalt product to virgin material to prepare the asphalt mix product for delivery at the desired temperature. By virtue of heating the recycled asphalt product and mixing the heated recycled asphalt product with the heated virgin material, the selected proportion of recycled asphalt product to virgin material is not limited by the maximum temperature of the heated virgin material, and asphalt mix product is produced effectively and economically with proportions of recycled asphalt product to virgin material which are considerably higher than heretofore available.

    • An asphalt plant includes a plurality of asphalt processing components including a first set of components producing volatile emissions and a second set of components requiring process heat. A separate central burner assembly is adapted to supply heat energy in the form of heated gas to satisfy the process heat requirements of the second set of components. A first duct system is provided which includes a fan and which is adapted to capture a portion of the volatile emissions produced by the first set of components and to convey the captured emissions into the central burner assembly for mitigation. A second duct system is provided and includes a fan and is adapted to convey heated gas from the central burner assembly to the second set of components.

    • A system to prevent accidental discharge of hot-mix asphalt at asphalt plants with multiple silos includes a closed circuit TV camera and a system of flashing lights. The TV camera has a fixed view of the loading area with a monitor at the control panel. When hot-mix asphalt is to be discharged into a truck, a switch is activated which causes a light beneath the bin to flash. This identifies the bin selected to open. The TV monitor is viewed and the position of the truck can now be visually confirmed along with the flashing light on the bin that has been activated. A second button must be pushed in order to complete the discharge of the hot-mix asphalt from the bin. Ideally, the second button is located either on the monitor or as close to it as possible in order to force the viewing of the screen before activating the second switch.

    • An apparatus and process is provided for the production of hot mix asphalt (HMA) by the treatment of virgin material alone or adding reclaimed or recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) of up to 100% of the HMA comprised of reclaimed asphaltic pavement (RAP). The HMA is first heated in either a parallel or a counter flow rotating drum which is supplied with hot combustion gases generated by a remote low NO.sub.x burner. The temperature of hot gases entering the drum is from about 400.degree. to 2,000.degree. F., and the temperature of gases exiting from the drum is from about 130.degree. to 220.degree. F. The HMA material optionally can be subjected to microwave radiation to raise the material to a final temperature, or optionally to only reorient the dipolar molecules of the material without any measurable heating of the material. The exhaust gas is treated and made environmentally safe. The hot gases exiting from the drum are passed through a knockout box and then through a baghouse having acrylic bags coated with a protective layer of particulate material. The gases exiting the baghouse are passed through an oxidizer to further remove smoke and asphaltic material and at least a portion of the gases from the oxidizer are recycled through a heat exchanger.
